What Moves U
With video games, television and computer often taking over play time, kids today are not getting the physical activity they need. Six out of 10 children ages 9-13 don't participate in any kind of organized sports or physical activity outside of school. Even more alarming, only one in four kids gets 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
That's why the Green Bay Packers and the American Heart Association have teamed up to launch What Moves U, a statewide campaign to inspire kids to become more physically active. What Moves U leverages the American Heart Association's health expertise and connection with schools and is backed by the NFL's mass appeal and commitment to physical fitness. In addition, the campaign draws on input from teachers and kids throughout the country.
The primary target for the campaign is middle school students, kids and teens, ages 9-13; the secondary targets are parents, teachers and the community. The nationwide campaign expects to reach more than 5 million kids and teens
Key components of the What Moves U initiative include:
In-School Learning Materials
- Activation kits for middle schools created "by teachers, for teachers"
- Curriculum-based activity sheets that are easy to weave into daily lesson plans for science, language arts, social studies, math and physical education
- School poster featuring Donald Driver
- Tips on how to increase physical activity in the classroom and school-wide
Web and Loyalty Program
- A Web site that engages kids to become more active and builds loyalty - keeping kids coming back for more ideas on how to stay active (www.WHATMOVESU.com)
- Kids can earn award points for both physical activity and online participation in quizzes, surveys and more
- Teachers can give award points to students to reward them for completing assigned in-class physical activities
- Students can use their award points to earn cool prizes
