Packers To Appear On U.S. Postage Stamp
posted 7/9/98
The Green Bay Packers and the first Super Bowl were both named as winners in the U.S. Postal Service's Celebrate the Century commemorative stamp and education program, and will be honored with a U.S. postage stamp.
In May of 1998, the public voted on which subjects best commemorated the 1960s. Over 930,000 ballots were cast, totaling over 8 million individual votes.
The Celebrate the Century program marks the first time the public has been invited to vote on stamp subjects honoring significant people, places, events and trends of each decade of the passing century.
Each decade ballot offered a total of 30 subjects divided into five categories: People & Events, Science & Technology, Arts & Entertainment, Sports, and Lifestyle. The top two vote-getters in each category along with the next five top vote-getters overall will become stamps for a total of 15 stamps per decade.
"Super Bowl Kicks Off" trailed only "Man Walks on the Moon" as the top vote-getter. Rounding out the top five were Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream," "The Peace Symbol," and the "Green Bay Packers."
"The results of the balloting reflect what is most memorable about the 1960s among adults and children across the country," said Postmaster General William Henderson.
The 15 subjects that will become U.S. postage stamps are:
- Super Bowl Kicks Off (Sports)
- Green Bay Packers (Sports)
- Roger Maris Breaks Homerun Record (Sports)
- "I Have a Dream" (People & Events)
- The Vietnam War (People & Events)
- The Peace Corps (People & Events)
- The Beatles (Arts & Entertainment)
- Woodstock (Arts & Entertainment)
- "Star Trek" (Arts & Entertainment)
- Man Walks on the Moon (Science & Technology)
- The Computer Chip (Science & Technology)
- Lasers (Science & Technology)
- The Peace Symbol (Lifestyle)
- Ford Mustang (Lifestyle)
- Barbie Doll Steps Out (Lifestyle)
The Packers compiled a 105-38-5 (.734) record during the 60s under head coaches Vince Lombardi and Phil Bengston.
During that decade, Green Bay won an unprecedented five NFL Championships in a seven year span, and added victories in the first two Super Bowls.
The '60s stamps will be available in post offices in September 1999.
Last year, Green Bay Packers coaching legend Vince Lombardi was honored with his likeness gracing a U.S. postage stamp as part of the Postal Service's "Legendary Coaches" stamp series. The Lombardi stamp design was unveiled at Lambeau Field on November 3, 1996 by Lombardi's daughter, Susan Lombardi, and Packers President Bob Harlan in a ceremony preceding the Packers-Lions game.
Lombardi's stamp was issued on August 5, 1997 as part of the Green Bay Packers Fan Experience at the Green Bay Expo Center.
"Vince Lombardi knew how to be number one and he shared that knowledge with those around him," said Postmaster General Marvin Runyon. "The epitome of a legend, his influence both on and off the field can still be felt today -- a postage stamp is a fitting tribute."
Lombardi coached the Packers from 1959 to 1968, and led the team to six divisional championships, five National Football League championships, and victories in Super Bowls I and II.
Lombardi was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
