| Green Bay fourth and fifth graders will be asked to help elect Brooks, Butler or Favre as the "Packers Man of the Year" |
Sprint and the Packers announced they are again teaming up to address the issue of sportsmanship. Sprint and the Packers present the second annual "Sprint Packers Good Sports Writing Program," a program designed to help kids focus on the importance of good sportsmanship and identify worthy role models.
This year the program includes a new twist: fourth and fifth graders will have the chance to elect a player representing the Packers as a finalist for the national Sprint NFL Man of the Year Award. The NFL Man of the Year Award is a 27-year old award recognizing players who demonstrate on-going, off-the-field commitment to important national or local community related causes as well as quality of play and sportsmanship on the field. This is the first time kids have had a vote in the election.
Locally, the program is being introduced to fourth and fifth grade students in Green Bay. The students will be encouraged to research on- and off-field contributions of three Sprint Packers Man of the Year candidates including Robert Brooks, LeRoy Butler and Brett Favre. They will write an essay of 200 words or less about the candidate they feel best exhibits Man of the Year qualities, thereby submitting their vote. The students' input will count as one-third of a total vote that also will include votes from the Packers and a Green Bay based blue ribbon panel.
One student will be selected from Packers country as the local market winner. He or she then will participate in a recognition event and have the chance to meet the elected Sprint Packers Man of the Year representative. In addition, Sprint will donate $1,000 in cash or technology to the students' school. He or she also will earn tickets to an upcoming Packers game.
On the national level, four national student winners will be selected by USA TODAY. Those winners will serve as part of a national blue ribbon panel that elects the Sprint NFL Man of the Year. The panel will include NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Sprint Chairman William T. Esrey, Sports Illustrated NFL Writer Peter King, 1997 Man of the Year Troy Aikman, NFL greats John Mackey and Frank Gifford, and former U.S. Senator Jack Kemp.
The four students, their families and their teachers will be guests of Sprint at Super Bowl XXXIII in South Florida, where they also will participate in the Sprint NFL Man of the Year press conference.
