Tuesday, November 17 was the official celebration of the 25th anniversary between the NFL, the Green Bay Packers and the United Way of Brown County. To celebrate that partnership, the Packers, United Way, and the Cornerstone Project presented a $25,000 check to the Coming Home project.

Wide receiver Robert Brooks, who stars in the 1998-99 NFL/United Way PSA, and guard Marco Rivera participated in the open house for the Coming Home project at Trinity Lutheran Church in Green Bay.

The NFL's 25-year partnership with United Way is the longest running partnership between a major sports league and the communities it serves.

More than 800 players, coaches, owners and other NFL representatives have volunteered to appear in the televised public service announcements (PSAs) that appear during most game telecasts. In the quarter centruy since the NFL and United Way combined forces, annual United Way fundraising has soared from $800 million to $3.4 billion; nothing else has been more efective in providing visibility and support for United Way. Although the NFL and United Way partnership is probably best known for the PSAs, the Packers' involvement extends far beyond the spots, including corporate and employee contributions, player appearances, and involvement by players, coaches and staff in many United Way member agencies.

"The Green Bay Packers and the NFL have provided us with the most recognized series of public service announcements ever, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation," notes United Way of Brown County President Herb Clauson. "The value of this 25-year tradition is phenomenal, and benefits all of the people who receive services via Untied Ways throughout Wisconsin.

Green Bay Packers President Bob Harlan stated, "United Way helps tens of thousands of people every year, right here in the Green Bay area. Multiply that by the hundreds of United Ways around the country. We commend all of the important work being done by each of them."

To honor the NFL for its unequaled contributions and to recognize the value of 25 years of NFL commitment to the United Way, a host of local and national activities are planned this year in many communities across the country. Here in Green Bay, United Way of Brown County is teaming up with the Packers and the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation to sponsor the "Coming Home" project through the Family Service Association. This unique and highly successful initiative involves at-risk youth in activities that teach them, guide them, and help them develop skills for the future. Hung Nguyen, the Director of Coming Home, started the project, reaching out to Southeast Asian youth in the Green Bay area. With this grant, he will be able to hire an outreach worker to approach Hispanic youngsters and purchase computers to teach computer literacy.
