Welcome Back Luncheon

The Green Bay Packers took a quick break between their two-a-day practices to have lunch with nearly one thousand Packers fans at the annual "Welcome Back Packer Luncheon" in Green Bay.

At this luncheon, it has also been a tradition since 1987 to announce the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award Recipient. A Packers player or coach is selected annually by the Packer organization to receive this prestigious honor that recognizes the many, significant contributions that Packer players and coaches make to our community and throughout the state through their volunteer involvement and leadership.

Recent recipients include Rob Davis, Adam Timmerman, John Jurkovic, Sean Jones, Aaron Taylor & Brett Favre.

Green Bay Packers wide reciever, and Sheboygan, Wisconsin native, Bill Schroeder was this year's recipient of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce's Community Service Award.

In presenting Schroeder with his award, here is what the Chamber of Commerce had to say about him...

This year's recipient, whose selection has been kept secret until today, has been chosen by the Packer organization, and serves as a role model for all of us.

In addition to the many public appearances he makes at hospitals and schools throughout the year, he and his wife, Shelly serve as honorary chairpersons for the March of Dimes. He is now in his fifth year of working with the Appleton, WI chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. During this past season, he held a charity bowling tournament locally, sponsored a football camp in Milwaukee for youth and has played for the "Titans of the Tundra," which is the Packers' charity basketball team.

Even with his success on the field, his commitment to the community continues.

The list of this individual's volunteer contributions is a long one. One that includes organizations such as the American Red Cross, Cerebral Palsy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Green Bay, the Alzheimers Association of La Crosse, WI, the Fellowship of Christian athletes, the UW-La Crosse football and track programs and the Sheyboygan Service Club, to name only a few.

This past April, he received the "professional Achievement Award" at the third annual Lee Remmel Sports Awards Banquet.

Living out many young football player's dreams, this Wisconsin native not only suits up for his homestate Packers, but has become a starter and depended-upon contributor to Green Bay's on field fortunes. In 1999, he became just the 7th 1,000-yard receiver in team history, and combining with Antonio Freeman, gave the Packers just the second 1,000-yard receiving duo in club history as well.

Besides being a Wisconsin native (one who used to watch the Packer training camp practices just like many of us in the room today), this is the second stint with the Packers for our recipient. He started on the practice squad in 1994, and was traded to the New England Patriots during training camp in 1995. He broke his foot during a preseason game with the Patriots and was waived by New England the following season. The Packers wasted no time in signing him again to the practice squad, and the rest is history.

When interviewed by the media recently, this individual commented, "Playing with the Packers is a dream come true. Sometimes I've got to pinch myself.

"I remember coming to training camp when I was a kid, and watching practice. I know what it feels like to be one of the fans here. Now I'm on the other side and it feels special playing here in Green Bay."

I think you'll all agree with me, that we're the lucky ones to have such a special young man as a member of our community and the Green Bay Packers.

Congratulations to this year's Community Service Award recipient, Bill Schroeder.
