BROWN COUNTY VOTES 'YES' FOR THE PACKERS

Brown County, Wis., voters decided to enact a 0.5% sales tax on Tuesday to help pay for the renovation of Lambeau Field.

It was a hard-fought victory for the Packers organization and its President and Chief Executive Officer, Bob Harlan, who unveiled the stadium redevelopment plan in January.

The plan calls for renovation to begin this winter and to be completed before the start of the Packers' 2003 season. It will add 10,000 new seats, including 4,000 exclusively set aside for Brown County residents, and the 'Titletown Atrium,' which will house the new Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and Packers Pro Shop. The renovation also will improve the stadium's concourse, upgrade bathroom facilities and increase concession areas.

Voters responded to the proposal with record turnout, voting positively by a 53% to 47% margin, with 3 districts still left to report their results Tuesday night. When it became clear that the "yes" voters would have their way, Harlan addressed hundreds of elated Team Lambeau supporters at Green Bay's Stadium View Bar & Grill.

Harlan's speech:

"Thank you very, very much. You know, the whole country tonight was watching Green Bay, Wisconsin. And as has happened many times in the past, this community and this football team have gotten together to perform one more miracle.

"In the 1920's, the 1930's, 1950, 1956 and now, in the year 2000, this small community, with 12 world championships - more than anyone else in the National Football League - the most unique story in all of sports, the best story in all of sports, the only time this story will ever occur is right here, and everybody in this county should be congratulated for what you've saved tonight.

"It's been a strong battle, and we said to everybody all along, let's take it back to Brown County, where it belongs. Let's take it back to the fans - the very best fans in the whole world - and the people who own the Green Bay Packers and let them make a decision. The decision has been made, and now it's time for this community to get together, to work together, to move on. We're going to have the finest stadium in the National Football League.

"And America's Team still resides in Green Bay, Wisconsin."
