Bob Harlan presents Dr. Green with a check for $10,000

Green Bay Packers President Bob Harlan and Jeanne McKenna, the team's director of community relations, presented the 2000 Community Quarterback Awards at a Tuesday press conference in the Packers' media auditorium.

Dr. Jeremy Green, a volunteer at Green Bay's N.E.W. Community Clinic, was recognized among eight deserving finalists as this year's Community Quarterback winner. As a result of Green's outstanding efforts, a $10,000 grant will be made to the charity of his choice.

Green, a practicing internist at Green Bay's Prevea Webster Clinic, has graciously volunteered for over 29 years at the N.E.W. Community Clinic, where he provides medical service to lower income citizens of Brown County.

"I'm deeply appreciative of this award," Green said upon acceptance of the award. "What it has done, it has recognized the free clinic. Really, I'm not the one being recognized today; it's the free clinic, and I do appreciate the Packers recognizing the free clinic. But I also think we should recognize the Packers for what they've done.

"The Packers are here to entertain us, excite us and even frustrate us at times," Green joked before regaining seriousness. "But they are very much an integral part of this community, and I think this ceremony and award shows that. I'm deeply appreciative of what the Packers have done."

In addition to Green, the finalists for the award and their affiliations were as follows:
  • Carol Bush, Encompass Child Care, Green Bay
  • Rhodesia Butler, Packers Women's Association, Green Bay
  • Ted Jones, Salvation Army of Chippewa Falls, Wis.
  • Virgil Koester, United Way of Brown County, Wis.
  • Bonnie Rankin, Salvation Army of Superior, Wis.
  • Jennifer Spychalski, Ashwaubenon High School, Green Bay
  • Mary and Don Verdegan, American Red Cross of Green Bay
Each finalist will receive a $1,000 grant to be donated to his/her charity of choice. Spychalski and the Verdegans will receive an additional $2,500 for being selected as runners-up to Green.

Before the participants adjourned to the honorees' luncheon, Harlan, joined by Green and the runners-up, recognized all of the nominees.

"I want to congratulate everybody that was a part of this," Harlan said. "This is a great event for this community, and I think it speaks again about what a special place Green Bay, Wisconsin is. All of you people who are here, thank you for what you do to make this what it really is. These are our winners, but believe me, you folks are winners too for being a part of this."

Green now becomes eligible to receive the NFL's national Community Quarterback Award and a $25,000 grant, presented in late December to one of the league's 31 local winners and his/her charity.

Funded by NFL Charities, the NFL Community Quarterback Award recognizes community and youth volunteers who demonstrate leadership, dedication and a commitment to bettering their communities. The nomination process is fulfilled by charitable organizations that nominate their distinguished volunteers, and a selection committee then is appointed by each NFL team to select its finalists and winners.
