Green Bay Packers Fans Help Donate More Than 235,755 Cans Of Soup to Food Banks
posted 01/19/01
Super Bowl heroes Kurt Warner, Terrell Davis and Joe Theismann, will lead teams from the NFC and AFC to help Campbell's Chunky Soup donate more than 1 million cans of soup to food banks nationwide on January 23. The "souper" showdown will mark the end of the successful Tackling Hunger 2000 program, which sought to achieve a donation of more than 5 million cans to food banks across the country during this NFL season.
Joe Theismann will officiate teams from the AFC and NFC, which will include Packers defensive end Vonnie Holliday, in a pre-Super Bowl match-up as they race to push tackling sleds loaded with Chunky Soup towards a 1 million can donation, and the distinction of Champions of Charity. The cans will be donated to food banks nationwide on behalf of the winning team.
Green Bay Packers fans and players also have helped Campbell's tackle hunger. During the course of the NFL season, more than 235,755 cans were donated across the country on behalf of the Packers through Tackling Hunger efforts including "Click For Cans," which asked fans to tackle hunger from their home computer by clicking on their favorite team on the Chunky Web site, www.chunky.com.
"Tackling Hunger 2000 is such a success because everyone from fans to players have gotten involved," said Joe Theismann, former Washington Redskin quarterback and current ESPN football analyst. "The cans donated through Tackling Hunger today, along with the 5 million total cans generated throughout the season, will go a long way to tackle hunger in America."
According to the USDA, more than 31 million Americans do not always know where their next meal will come from. Worldwide, more than 800 million people are undernourished, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
In addition to the "Click For Cans" portion of the Tackling Hunger program, former Packers lineman Craig Heimburger also weighed in earlier this year on a giant soup spoon scale to donate more than 2,820 cans of Chunky soup to Paul's Pantry - or 10 times his weight in soup. Additionally, a nationwide donation of 72,000 cans was generated by the 36 touchdowns the Packers scored this season.
Campbell has worked with the NFL to donate more than 20 million cans of soup during the past four years on behalf of Tackling Hunger. "This has truly been a great season for Campbell's and the NFL - working together for such an important cause," said Srini Sripada, business director, Chunky Soup. "We hope to carry the success of the Tackling Hunger 2000 program into next season and beyond."
