A jubilant, sun-drenched crowd of close to 1,000 fans gathered at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, Saturday morning, (May 19) for the groundbreaking ceremony of the renovation of Lambeau Field.

A sand sculpture replica of the current Lambeau Field was one of the focal points of the event. During the ceremony, dignitaries participating in the event "broke ground" on the sculpture, signifying the future of not only the venerable stadium but the Green Bay Packers franchise, as well.

The sculpture was part of a day-long celebration that included the Lambeau Hug -- an attempt at the world record for a group hug, appearances by past and present Packer greats, a special presentation to the Packers Hall of Fame, a ground breaking ceremony, and a tailgate party immediately following the ceremony.

"Today was a great day to celebrate the past, present and future of Lambeau Field," said Packers President Bob Harlan. "It was a community celebration; a community thank-you to all the people who supported the renovation of Lambeau as well as the Brown County taxpayers who are making this possible."

The morning gathering began with the aforementioned Lambeau Hug where Packers fans traveled from near and far to link up with each other inside of the stadium. Members of the Packers administration will wait for official word from officials at the Guinness Book of World Records next week to announce the total number of officials "huggers" that participated.

Among the highlights of the one-hour groundbreaking program Saturday:
  • Entertainment by the Preble and West De Pere High School Bands as well as the UW-Green Bay cheerleaders
  • A flag presentation by the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. (The Girl Scouts are from the Denmark Service Unit of the Lac Baie Council Villages. The Boy Scouts are Troop #1113 sponsored by St. John the Baptist Church in Howard.)
  • Welcome from Governor Scott McCallum
  • General Manager Ron Wolf's last public appearance as a member of the Packers
  • Comments from Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman
  • Appearances by current Packers players LeRoy Butler, Ahman Green, Ryan Longwell and Bill Schroeder
  • Comments from Packer great Bart Starr
  • A special presentation to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame by Packer Hall of Famer Dave Robinson
A four-phase groundbreaking of a sand sculpture replica of Lambeau Field. The lead-off groundbreaking team represented the Packers' past, present and future: Bart Starr and Dave Robinson; Butler, Green, Longwell and Schroeder; and two 11 year old Green Bay youngsters, Cory Jansa and Lacey Van Zeeland. The youngsters submitted the winning entries in an essay contest which for the opportunity to be part of the first groundbreaking team.
