Packers Director of Security Jerry Parins gets ready to ride

The United States Postal Service stands by its motto to deliver through all sorts of inclement weather. Some members of the Green Bay Packers and devoted Harley-Davidson riders proved they could do the same Saturday (June 2). On a day more suited for a trip to the movies, diehard enthusiasts showed up in the pouring rain to support the 9th annual Packerland Muscular Dystrophy Association Ride to raise money for the organization and its causes.

Packers Director of Security, Jerry Parins was one of the organizers of the event. Current Green Bay stars K Ryan Longwell, NT Gilbert Brown, and G Marco Rivera joined in on the ride, as did new Director of Player Programs and former Packers running back Edgar Bennett. Although Parins was the only to ride his bike in the rain, the players were happy to meet fans, sign autographs, and take pictures with those who wanted to.

Before Saturday Parins was looking forward to an even bigger turnout than last year. "With good weather we were hoping for 2,000 plus people riding," he said. "Every year it keeps getting better."

Parins was a little disappointed with the bad weather but always enjoys meeting those who came along for the ride even with the rain. He said, "It's going to be wet today, but the people are awesome. I get to meet riders who come back each year -- the people are just outstanding."

The ride started at 11:00 a.m. at McCoy's Harley Davidson dealership in Green Bay and headed to Clintonville's Olen Park where the players stopped for an autograph session. Parins' Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail HD led the way through the 100-mile route that eventually ended up back in Green Bay where riders were greeted by food and entertainment.

The most important part of this event was to raise money for MDA. Each rider was asked to make a donation to participate. Before the ride, there was an auction featuring autographed footballs and helmets by Packers players such as Ahman Green and Brett Favre. The proceeds from the auction and rider donations go to help the organization in its fight against the disease.
