NATE WAYNE VISITS GREEN BAY WEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM
posted 10/23/01
 |
| Nate Wayne talked to the GB West Football Team for an hour after school on Tuesday |
Green Bay West hosted linebacker Nate Wayne in celebration of NFL "High School Tuesday." West was chosen to host Wayne through the Player Visit Contest on NFLHS.com, the NFL's official high school football web site.
Wayne talked to players for almost an hour on topics from what high school football was like for him to how demanding professional football can be. He used examples from his football career to help motivate the West players.
"Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something," Wayne said.
The fourth-year pro talked about former Saints linebacker Sam Mills inspiring him as a football player during high school. Both were undersized, but worked hard to become successful linebackers.
Wayne also emphasized the importance of keeping up with scholastic responsibilities in addition to excelling on the football field. He finished out his question and answer session with the team by telling stories about the hardest hitters in the NFL and what he does to motivate himself to prepare properly for each game.
After Wayne's presentation, West head coach Mike Framke was honored as last week's "Packers Coach of the Week." The coach was presented with an award including a $500 check to support the football program at West. Each team member also received a "Coach of the Week" T-shirt.
"NFL Tuesdays" are the traditional day off for NFL players during the season, but many players use their day off to go to work in their communities.
Entering its third year, NFLHS.com reports stories on NFL players and coaches related to high school football including weekly state-by-state prep gridiron news with more than 1,100 high school football articles and columns annually. NFLHS.com is part of the NFL Internet Network, comprised of NFL.com, team and other sites. The NFL Internet Network is the world's most popular sports league online entity.
An all-time high 1,035,941 boys played high school football in the 2000-2001 school year according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. This marks an increase of more than 8,400 participating students from the 1999-2000 season, which had been the previous all-time high. Football nearly doubles the next-most played high school sport of boys (basketball), which had 539,749 participants, a decline of nearly 10,000 players from 1998-99.
