| Col. Marianee Rogers presents Bob Harlan with the American Spirt Award |
The American Spirit Award, the highest form of recognition for contributions to the Air Force recruiting mission, was presented to the Green Bay Packers today. Packers President Bob Harlan and GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman accepted the award on behalf of the Packers organization.
The Air Force presents the award to a civilian organization for consistent national support, exhibition of patriotism and service to country. The nomination process starts at a local Air Force level with the national Air Force selection committee deciding the recipient from the nominations received throughout the nation. There are only two recipients of this prestigious award annually.
The Packers have worked with the Air Force to stage several flyovers (B-52 and B-1) prior to a game. An Air Force soloist and band have performed the National Anthem in addition to the local Air Force recruiters presenting the Colors during the National Anthem. The Air Force has also conducted an oath of enlistment ceremony for 125 young Wisconsin residents at halftime in Lambeau Field.
Linebacker Chris Gizzi, an Air Force Academy graduate, was also mentioned for his exceptional recruiting work. Last year, he went to three high schools (Oshkosh North, Ashwaubenon, and Sheboygan Falls) with Air Force representatives to recognize those football teams for their accomplishments as state champions.
Col. Marianee Rogers, Headquarters Air Force Recruiting Service Chief, traveled from San Antonio to present the award to the Packers. A plaque, which will be on display at the team offices, was given to Harlan and Sherman along with an Air Force hat for each to wear. Harlan wasted little time in donning his cap as he accepted the award from Rogers.
"This is a wonderful honor, " Harlan said. "The Packers and the rest of the world thank you for making this a safe place and for your dedication to our country."
