Players Raise Spirits At Kids' Holiday Party

Professional football players may be notorious for their resolve and strength, but when compared to the kids they spent time with Wednesday night, it's no contest.

Nearly 200 children, accompanied by their families and loved ones, attended the seventh annual "Families of Children with Cancer Holiday Party" at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in De Pere. Packers players mingled with the children and their families, played a variety of games with the kids, and participated in a spirited sing-along of carols.

The night of fun and games with their favorite Packers gave the children an escape from their health issues, and the players realized that.

"It really is inspiring and motivating to see these young kids fight the things they have going on internally," kicker Mason Crosby said. "The fact that they're struggling inside is a sad thing and makes me happy that we can come and get some laughs, enjoy some time and kick off the holiday season the right way."

Donation Request Process Now Online

The Green Bay Packers' community outreach department has a new online process for requesting in-kind donations from the Packers.

Implemented this week, the new system will allow for a more efficient and consistent process, both for the Packers and for the organizations and individuals requesting items. The Packers annually receive thousands of requests for donations of items to be used in fundraising efforts. In 2007, the Packers assisted more than 8,000 charities with donated items that raised approximately $2.5 million.

The completely online process provides a Web page with entry areas for all the required information from the applicant, which eliminates missing information and subsequent delays in the process. An account is set up with the applicant's e-mail address, which is then utilized for automatic correspondence regarding submission, a decision on the request and then follow-up after the event.

"We're excited to be able to offer this new resource,"..

The Green Bay Packers and Bellin Health unveiled new, football-themed billboards last week on the Don Hutson Center, the team's indoor practice facility.
Kids Tackle New Playground With Hometown Huddle Project

First was the work. Then it was play time, for everybody.

Seven Packers players and a group of students from Beaumont Elementary School in Green Bay put the finishing touches on the school's new playground on Tuesday, tackling piles of wood chips that began the afternoon taller than some of the kids themselves.

Using any combination of rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows, the wood chips were spread evenly throughout the new playground equipment, providing a soft, safe surface for the kids to run wild on when school let out less than an hour later.

The manual labor was part of this year's NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle project, and the kids in particular were wasting no time getting their new playground ready.
11th Packers FAN Hall Of Fame Honoree Sought

Want to nominate the 'Ultimate Packers Fan?'

The annual search is on for a new Packers FAN Hall of Fame honoree.

The first professional football team to have its own hall of fame, the Green Bay Packers enhanced that distinction in 1998 by establishing a Packers FAN Hall of Fame. It was founded, in conjunction with the Packers Hall of Fame, for the purpose of annually honoring a devout and longtime Packers fan.

As has been the case each of the past 10 years, nominees are being sought for recognition by a selection committee. The late Mel Knoke of Appleton was chosen as the inaugural enshrinee in the FAN Hall of Fame. The 91-year-old Knoke, who died between the time of his election and enshrinement, was honored posthumously at the 1999 Packers Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.
In addition to Knoke, past honorees..

Community Outreach Continues To Expand, Evolve

The Green Bay Packers' community outreach department has come a long way in six years.

In fact, the name itself is fairly new. Formerly known as community relations, the community outreach department changed its name to better reflect its goals and what it does, which is to make a consistent, positive impact throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan communities via numerous outreach programs.

Cathy Dworak, the team's manager of community outreach, said the number of programs and initiatives has grown so much that since 2002, when the department included her and one part-time employee, the team has added another part-time and three full-time staff members.

That has allowed the annual number of player and coach appearances in the community to increase from 80 six years ago to around 530 last year. But it's not just the player and coach appearances the department organizes.

There are several donation and Make-A-Wish requests, community events, fitness..

The Green Bay Packers and Head Coach Mike McCarthy have partnered to make a $100,000 donation to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., it was announced Wednesday.
McCarthy, entering his third season as head coach of the Packers, earned a degree in business administration from the school and was an all-conference tight end and senior captain in 1986, helping lead the Wildcats to an NAIA Division II national runner-up finish. He was inducted to the school's hall of fame Oct. 20, 2007.

"I'm very excited to make this donation to Baker University," said McCarthy. "The university made a positive impact on me that continues today. It's a great learning environment, from the classroom to the athletic programs. Much of my success in my career I owe to what I learned and took from my experiences there. It's an honor to be able to give back to the school and support it in a very meaningful way. I also appreciate the Packers organization in joining me."

Packers Help Celebrate Sixth Annual Kids' Day

Exactly six months before Christmas, Green Bay children were given an early present on Wednesday.

For the sixth consecutive year, the city of Green Bay celebrated Kids' Day, a tradition that was started to show children how special they are to their families and to the community. The annual celebration, which Mayor Jim Schmitt implemented upon taking office in 2003, was in fact adopted from within Schmitt's own family.

"I was a father long before I was a mayor," Schmitt said. "I thought it would be right to set a special day aside, so we set June 25th as a day to honor the kids. When I was elected mayor, I said, 'We ought to do that as a city.' And we've done that.

"It's really grown to where we have over 7,000 kids participate. The Packers have stepped up in a big way. There's free tours at the Hall of Fame today and we've got 17 Packers here to celebrate with the kids. It's a very special day here in Green Bay."

Community Initiative Announced to Save Student Athletes' Lives

Free Screenings For Deadly Heart Condition To Be Offered In July

A community initiative was announced today at Lambeau Field to provide free screenings for area high school athletes to identify those who might have a deadly heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).

"Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the most common cause of sudden death among young athletes in the U.S.," explained Dr. James Rider, a cardiologist with Cardiology Associates. "In fact, every two weeks in the U.S. a young person dies from this condition. We hear about these cases in the media on a regular basis." Generally, those who die from the condition are young athletes who have just participated in some form of strenuous exercise.

Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy knows firsthand the devastating effects of undetected heart conditions in young athletes. In 2005, when he was an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, player Thomas Herrion collapsed and died..

Junior Power Pack Enjoys Great Day Of Football On Nitschke Field

It was a beautiful Saturday for football at Ray Nitschke Field. Fans from across the state of Wisconsin turned out to watch practice. They did not come out to see names like Donald Driver, Ryan Grant or Aaron Rodgers practice, but to watch for some of the youngest Packers backers like Hunter, 9, Miles, 8, and nearly 1,150 other youngsters get a chance to actually practice on the same field as the Green and Gold.

The 11th annual Junior Power Pack Experience is a skills camp for members of the Packers' official kids' fan club. This unique experience allows members of the club the opportunity to work on their football skills and run through some of the same drills that the Packers do everyday at practice.

"I think this will help me become a better quarterback," said Miles, a first-time participant from Appleton, standing in line waiting for the next drill. "Throwing the ball was definitely my favorite drill."

Another exciting part of this camp for the youngs..

Wisconsin Food Banks Receive Soup-er Donation

The Packers have won this contest for six years running, and food pantries in Wisconsin certainly appreciate it.

More than 13,000 cans of Campbell's Chunky soup were distributed to 15 Wisconsin area food banks in the parking lot of Lambeau Field on Thursday, the result of Packers' fans registering more than 2.5 million votes in the annual "Click For Cans" online food drive.

Food pantries came from as far as a couple hundred miles away to collect approximately 880 cans apiece. Their trucks and transport vehicles were loaded by Packers players Brady Poppinga, Cullen Jenkins and Noah Herron, along with strength and conditioning coaches Rock Gullickson, Mark Lovat and Brandon Johnson.

The full donation represented the weight of the official Green Bay Packers' roster in soup cans, which will benefit those in need in Wisconsin. An additional 1,000 cans were split between two Brown County pantries.

"This means we'll be able to give a greater variety of fo..

TRAINING SESSION SET FOR 145 WISCONSIN SCHOOLS SATURDAY AT LAMBEAU

The Green Bay Packers and the American Heart Association have joined together to create "What Moves U," a new program offered to middle schools throughout Wisconsin designed to combat childhood obesity with the help of the state's teachers.

The program to promote healthy living will be introduced Saturday, Feb. 16, to 200 attendees from 145 Wisconsin schools during a kickoff event that will provide a distribution of the "What Moves U" activation binder, educational speakers and activity demonstrations.
Packers, Levy Restaurants At Lambeau Field Present Awards To Outstanding Concession Stand Groups

At each game, these hard working folks run many of the concession stands at Lambeau Field, pouring beer, grilling brats and burgers, running the cash registers and so much more. The big surprise is that they aren't doing all of this hustling for extra cash for themselves, but for the good of 65 area non-profit organizations.

Levy Restaurants and the Green Bay Packers honored these organizations for their time and dedication during the 2007 season with its annual Non-Profit Group Appreciation Banquet at the Lambeau Field Legends Club Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008. More than 400 people attended the ceremony.

These non-profit groups, which include service organizations and school groups, commit to working at each and every game of the season, some of them even bringing more than 30 people on a regular basis to help serve up the mouth-watering food from Levy's concession stands, such as Going Deep Pizza, The Munch Zone and Draft Picks.

In exchange for their service, g..
