Regarded as one of the most physical safeties in the nation, this Jim Thorpe Award candidate was a versatile performer for the Bruins, starting at free safety after playing strong safety earlier in his career...Has a sharp back pedal, showing no hesitation in transition...Displays excellent range, playing with discipline while showing quickness in his movements...Great leaper with fluid hips...Aware in the zone, handling the switch-offs with ease...Quick to digest the plays, coming up with aggression to lend support vs. the run...Uses his hands well to prevent from getting tied up by blockers near the line of scrimmage...Very effective mirroring the receivers in the short area...Takes physical arm swipes to jam the tight ends and shows a very sharp burst coming off the edge as a blitzer...Possesses the coverage ability of a cornerback and shows superb big-play potential...Marques has the size, speed and strength to be an impact player and is very strong for a defensive back, with impressive testing numbers across the board as evidence (see Agility test results)...Closed out his career with 236 tackles (174 solos), four sacks for minus 20 yards and 16 stops for losses of 42 yards... Had eight interceptions for 63 yards in returns, 40 pass deflections, nine forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
2001 SEASON
All-American third-team and All-Pac 10 Conference first-team selection by The NFL Draft Report, adding fourth-team national honors from The Sporting News and second-team conference honor from the media...Semi-finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award...Shifted to free safety, finishing second on the team with 63 tackles (40 solos), including a 2-yard sack and five stops for losses of 7 yards...Intercepted two passes and led the team with ten pass deflections...Caused and recovered a fumble...Though not charted as an official statistic, he caused receivers to drop 24 passes after he delivered the initial hit.
Alabama...Opened the season with 7 tackles (6 solos), forcing receiver Freddie Milons to drop four passes.
Kansas...Deflected 2 passes and posted 7 tackles.
Ohio State...Led a secondary that allowed only five completions of 23 pass attempts for a total of 45 yards (Buckeyes dropped eight balls), as he totaled 8 tackles (5 solos), sacked QB Steve Bellisari for a 2-yard loss, stopped tailback Jonathan Wells behind the line of scrimmage and picked off a pass while deflecting 2 others.
Oregon State...Recovered a fumble after tackling tailback Ken Simonton for a 1-yard loss and collected 4 tackles (2 solos).
Washington...Caused Husky receivers to drop the ball three times while deflecting a pass and making a pair of tackles.
California...Posted 5 tackles (4 solos) with a pair of pass break-ups.
Stanford...Registered 11 tackles (7 solos) with a stop for a loss, an interception and a forced fumble that set up the team's final touchdown drive.

2000 SEASON
Earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 Conference acclaim from the league's coaches...
Playing strong safety, he ranked third on the squad with 73 tackles (53 solos) and had three sacks for minus 18 yards...His 11 stops for losses of 35 yards led the team...Caused three fumbles and recovered four others...Had three interceptions for 11 yards in returns and was second on the squad with 12 pass deflections.
Alabama...Opened the season with 4 tackles (3 solos), a sack and a pair of deflected passes.
Fresno State...Followed with 5 tackles (3 solos), including one behind the line of scrimmage and batted away 2 passes.
Michigan...Posted 8 tackles (6 solos) with a stop for a loss, a pass deflection and a forced fumble.
Oregon...Delivered 8 hits (6 solos) with a sack and 2 stops for losses.
California...Returned to action with 5 solo tackles and made a diving interception at the Cal 39-yard line to set up a Bruin touchdown drive...Also recovered a fumble to set up another UCLA score.
Oregon State...Registered 7 tackles (4 solos) with a stop behind the line of scrimmage, recovered two fumbles and caused another...Late in the game, he forced another fumble at the goal line but the play was ruled dead on a false start by the Beaver offense.
Arizona...Posted 5 hits (3 solos) with an interception...Ran down Wildcat QB Ortege Jenkins from behind to prevent a touchdown (Jenkins then threw an interception)... His interception led to a UCLA touchdown (by Brian Poli-Dixon), which put the Bruins ahead at the time, 14-7.
Stanford...Made 8 tackles (6 solos) with a sack and 2 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Washington...Registered 9 tackles and caused a fumble.
Southern California...Followed with 8 tackles (5 solos) with a pair of stops for losses and a pass deflection...Recovered a fumble in the end zone on the first play of the game.
Wisconsin (Sun Bowl)...Had 6 tackles and an interception.
1998 SEASON
Performed as both a starter and a key reserve during his sophomore season, starting six games (Texas, Houston, Washington, USC, Miami and Wisconsin) at strongside cornerback...Also played on several special teams units (punt and punt coverage and field goal block)...Finished with 58 tackles (50 solos)...Led the team with four forced fumbles and ranked second with 11 pass deflections.

Freshman All-American selection by The Sporting News...Became an impact player as a true freshman, starting vs. Texas, Arizona, Houston, Oregon and Texas A&M at strongside cornerback...Selected defensive winner of UCLA's John Boncheff, Jr. Memorial Award for Rookie of the Year...Concluded the season with 42 tackles (34 solos), second to Larry Atkins among 1998 returnees...Ranked third on the squad with three interceptions for 32 yards...Also credited with seven pass deflections.
