AFL NOTES: Mike Hawkins made an impression on the coaching staff at the team's 2004 open tryouts they just couldn't shake. As a result, Hawkins had a chance to make his professional football debut in the Arena Football League after signing with Dallas on Dec. 30, 2003. He is a raw cornerback that displays the potential to be a solid professional football player and will continue to develop as he fights for a spot on the 2005 roster.
AFL 2004: Hawkins was plagued with injuries through his rookie season and saw time in just five games, totaling 3.5 tackles and a forced fumble. He suffered a left quad contusion in training camp and was placed on Reserve/Injured on Jan. 30. He was activated from Reserve/Injured March 5 and made his professional football debut against Grand Rapids (3/6), posting a tackle. Hawkins was inactive in games at Carolina (3/13) and against Los Angeles (3/21) before seeing time at Philadelphia (4/4). He was then inactive for the next three games before seeing limited action and forcing a fumble against New York (5/1). At Austin (5/9), Hawkins recorded 1.5 stops before being inactive at Chicago (5/16). He saw limited time as the third defensive back, registering one tackle, against Columbus (5/22). He was inactive for the season finale against Tampa Bay (5/3).
COLLEGE: 2002 - In his only year of collegiate football, Hawkins saw action in five games for the Oklahoma Sooners as a true freshman. He recorded five tackles, a pass defensed and an interception, which he returned 45 yards for a touchdown.
PERSONAL: Hawkins was considered one of the top prep cornerbacks in the nation after earning all-America and all-district honors as a senior at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton, Tex. - a suburb of Dallas. In his final prep campaign in 2001, he recorded 51 tackles, 12 passes defensed, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a tackle for a loss. He also returned two kickoffs for 104 yards. Hawkins was also a member of the track team, competing in the 100-meters, the long jump and the triple jump.
