David Clowney | Wide Receiver | Virginia Tech | 6'0" - 188 lbs.
OVERVIEW
Clowney is a two-sport athlete who excelled in track at Virginia Tech and was the lone senior on a
young Hokies' receiving unit.
David was a Class 5A All-State honorable mention as a senior receiver at Atlantic High School,
earning four letters on the gridiron. He also competed as a safety, leading the team to an
undefeated regular season during his final year. Clowney garnered All-Palm Beach County
honors from The Palm Beach Post Sun-Sentinel, as he totaled 25 catches for 576 yards (23.0
avg) and a county-best ten touchdowns in 2002. He returned three kickoffs for 245 yards (81.7
avg) and a pair of scores and also made one of the season's biggest plays, a 95-yard touchdown
catch against Ely in the regional finals that year.
Clowney added 39 receptions as a junior, coming up with three receptions for 120 yards and two
touchdowns vs. Wellington High. He also lettered as a sprinter on the track team. He was a state
finalist in the 200 meters and a regional finalist in the 100 meters. David added two more letters
as a guard on the basketball squad.
He enrolled at Virginia Tech in 2003, seeing action in 12 games as a reserve receiver. David
gained 67 yards on five receptions (13.4 avg) and a touchdown.
Despite starting only one of 12 games in 2004, Clowney ranked fourth on the team with 20
catches for 263 yards (13.2 avg) and two touchdowns. He gained 45 yards on a pair of kickoff
returns, but lost 20 yards when he was tackled behind the line of scrimmage on a reverse. He
competed for the school's indoor track team and posted a 60-meter dash time of 6.87 in the Big
East Conference Prelims and finished second in that event at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Clowney started 12 games on the right side of the field in 2005, coming up with a team-high 34
receptions for 619 yards (18.2 avg) and three touchdowns. He also returned one kickoff for 30
yards. In outdoor track, David ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes and helped set a school indoor
record with a time of 6.94 in the 60 meters at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
David started five of 12 games he played in during the 2006 campaign. Clowney led the team
with 34 catches for 424 yards (12.5 avg), but did not have any touchdowns. He had two kickoff
returns for 44 yards and recorded three tackles (2 solos) while recovering his own fumble.
In 49 games at Virginia Tech, Clowney started 18 times. He hauled in 93 passes for 1,373 yards
(14.8 avg) and six touchdowns. He gained 119 yards on five kickoff returns (23.8 avg), but was
stopped twice for losses totaling minus 25 yards on two reverses. David recorded three tackles (2
solos) and recovered two fumbles.
CAREER NOTES
Clowney caught 93 of the 131 passes targeted to him...His 93 receptions rank seventh on the
school's career-record list behind Ernest Wilford (126, 2000-03), Antonio Freeman (121, 1991-
94), Ricky Scales (113, 1972-74), Andre Davis (103, 1998-01), Mike Giacolone (103, 1979-82)
and Myron Richardson (100, 1986-89)...18th player in school annals with over 1,000 yards
receiving (1,250)...55 of his catches resulted in first downs, as he converted 17-of-27 third-down
plays and one other on fourth down... 17 of his receptions were good for 20 yards or longer...He
came up with catches that set up 20 touchdown drives and five others that ended in field goals.
2006 SEASON
David played in 12 games, starting vs. North Carolina, Duke, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and
Virginia at flanker...Missed the Cincinnati contest after he underwent an emergency
appendectomy on September 21st, but proving his toughness, he was back on the field nine days
later to play vs. Georgia Tech...Led the team with 34 receptions for 424 yards (12.5 avg), but did
not have any touchdowns...David recorded three tackles (tweo solos) and recovered his own
fumble...He had a pair of kickoff returns for 44 yards (22.0 avg)...Of the 48 passes targeted to
him, one was deflected by the opposition...Clowney converted 7-of-8 third-down plays and
produced seventeen first-down grabs...Four of his catches were for 20 yards or longer...Had big
catches that set up four touchdown drives and three others that ended with field goals.
2005 SEASON
Played in eleven games, starting three games at split end...Ranked second on the team with 30 receptions for 278 yards (9.3 avg) and one touchdown...Rushed eight times for 48 yards (6.0 avg) and returned 20 punts for 106 yards (5.3 avg)...Also recorded five tackles (4 solos)...Fumbled once in the Eastern Washington clash.
2005 GAME HIGHLIGHTS
David played in every game, starting the final 12 contests...He led the team with 34 receptions for
619 yards (18.2 avg) and three touchdowns...Of the 50 passes targeted to him, two were
deflected by the opposition (opponent also recovered one of two fumbles)...21 of his catches
resulted in first downs, converting 3-of-9 third-down plays...Ten of his grabs were for 20 yards or
longer...He had critical catches that set up twelve touchdown drives and one more that ended
with a field goal...Also returned one kickoff for 30 yards.
2004 SEASON
Recipient of the Frank O. Mosley Award, given to the team's top offensive hustler...Played in 12
games, earning his only start for the season in the Florida A&M clash...Caught 20 of 27 passes
thrown to him for 263 yards (13.1 avg) and two touch-downs...Added 45 yards on two kickoff
returns, but was tackled for a 20-yard loss on a reverse...Thirteen of his catches resulted in first
downs, as Clowney converted all five third-down plays he was involved in...Two of his receptions
were good for over 20 yards.
2003 SEASON
Saw action in 12 games, playing 96 snaps on offense and 44 on special teams... Had five
receptions for 67 yards (13.4 avg) and a touchdown...Four of his receptions resulted in first
downs, as he converted 2-of-3 third-down plays.
TRACK CAREER NOTES
Four-time letterman as a sprinter for Virginia Tech's track team...He holds the third-best 55-meter
dash time in school history (6.38 in 2005), topped only by Andre Davis (6.30 in 2000) and Cedric
Patrick (6.37 in 1993)...His 2004 timing of 6.87 seconds in the 60 meters also places him third on
the school's all-time record list behind Andre Davis (6.72 in 1999) and Larry Austin (6.84 in 1998).
