OVERVIEW
The consummate team player, the coaching staff took full advantage of Jones' athletic ability and versatility in 2006. He not only went on to lead the team in receptions, but also showed a strong throwing arm for the option pass, natural hands to handle punt return duties and also keep the defenses honest with his ability to get good yardage on the reverse. He went on to score by catching, running and throwing the ball during his final year.
Jones was the 2001 League Most Valuable Player as a senior at Gunderson High School. He was a first-team All-Central Coast Section choice and played in the 2002 Santa Clara County North- South All-Star Game. In addition to football, he lettered in basketball and track, registering a personal best of 6'8" in the high jump.
Decided to stay local, Jones enrolled at San Jose State in 2002, spending the season on the scout team. He saw minimal action in nine games in 2003, but caught only one pass for 8 yards while recording three tackles. He started six of eleven contests as a sophomore, ranking second on the team with 25 receptions for 317 yards (12.7 avg) and a touchdown. He added 80 yards on eleven punt returns (7.3 avg) and recorded one solo tackle.
As a junior, Jones started just three games, but he still finished second on the squad with 30 grabs for 278 yards (9.3 avg) and one touchdown. He picked up 48 yards on eight carries (6.0 avg) and 106 yards on 20 punt returns (5.3 avg). He also totaled five tackles (4 solos) on special teams.
The second-team All-Western Athletic Conference choice was named team MVP in 2006. He led the team with a career-high 70 receptions, gaining 893 yards (12.8 avg) with ten touchdowns. He rushed eleven times for 76 yards (6.9 avg) and a score and returned eleven punts for 121 yards (11.0 avg). He also connected on 2-of-6 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
In 44 games at San Jose State, Jones started 21 contests. He snared 126 passes for 1,496 yards (11.2 avg) and twelve touchdowns. He gained 126 yards with a score on 24 reverses 95.3 avg) and completed 3-of-7 passes (42.9%) for 58 yards and a touchdowns. Jones made nine tackles (6 solos) on special teams and returned 42 punts for 307 yards (7.3 avg).
CAREER NOTES
Jones' 70 receptions in 2006 rank fourth on the school's season-record list behind Guy Liggins (72 in 1986 and 77 in 1987) and Edell Shepherd (83 in 2001)...His ten touchdown catches in 2006 are topped only by Edell Shepherd (14 in 2001) and Oliver Newell (11 in 1997) on the Spartans' annual record books...Ranks eleventh in school annals with 1,496 yards receiving...His 126 receptions rank third in school history behind Tim Kearse (142, 1980-82) and Guy Liggins (149, 1986-87).
2006 SEASON
All-Western Athletic Conference second-team selection...Named the team's MVP, as he started all year at split end...Led the team and ranked 27th in the nation with a career-high 70 receptions for 893 yards (12.8 avg) and ten touchdowns...Picked up 76 yards and a score on eleven carries (6.9 avg)...Scored 66 points...Completed 2-of-6 passes (33.3%) for 57 yards and a touchdown...Gained 121 yards on eleven punt returns (11.0 avg)...Turned the ball over once on three fumbles...Led the team with an average of 83.85 all-purpose yards per game.
2006 GAME ANALYSIS
Washington...Jones put on quite a show in the first game of the 2006 season, catching nine passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns...With 11:31 remaining in the third quarter, the Spartan receiver snagged a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Tafralis, capping an eight-play, 65-yard drive...Jones scored twice in the second half of the fourth quarter, catching touchdown receptions of 50 and 6 yards that completed drives of 73 yards (four plays) and 81 yards (10 plays), respectively.
Stanford...Jones totaled seven receptions for 82 yards, including a 33-yarder...His lone touchdown came on a 42-yard run at the 8:45 mark in the third quarter, capping a two-play, 73-yard drive...The receiver finished the game with two rushes for 57 yards.
California Polytechnic...Jones did a little bit of everything in the Spartans' 17-7 victory over Cal-Poly, catching nine passes for 92 yards, including a long of 43 yards, rushing one time for nine yards, returning three punts for 70 yards, including a 49-yarder, and throwing one incomplete pass.
San Diego State...The Spartan wideout continued to be a multi-purpose threat, hauling in five passes for 21 yards, rushing once for minus 1 yard, returning one punt for 8 yards, and throwing one pass for a 47-yard touchdown...Jones found receiver John Broussard for the 47-yard score with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter.
Utah State...Jones collected eight receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown in the Spartans' 21-14 victory, but also fumbled the ball three times, as USU recovered one of those miscues...With 2:01 remaining in the third quarter, Jones hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass for quarterback Adam Tafralis...The Spartan receiver added two carries for no gain and returned four punts for 7 yards.
Nevada...The Spartan pass-catcher finished the contest with three receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown...Ten seconds before halftime, Jones hauled in a 13-yard touchdown toss from quarterback Adam Tafralis...Jones added one rush for four yards and threw one incomplete pass...His longest reception of the game was good for 30 yards.
Louisiana Tech...Jones had his least productive game of the season to date, finishing the contest with three receptions for 15 yards.
New Mexico State...Jones had another quiet afternoon, registering one catch for 8 yards and one rush for minus 8 yards.
Boise State...The Spartan receiver found the end zone twice as part of his eight-catch, 88-yard performance vs. Boise State...Jones scored the first touchdown of the afternoon, a 10-yard pass from quarterback Adam Tafralis, four seconds into the second quarter, capping a nine-play, 70-yard drive...His second touchdown came courtesy of a 3-yard pass from Tafralis with 14:21 left in the fourth quarter...Jones' longest reception of the day was good for 28 yards...He also had one rush for 5 yards.
Hawaii...Registered no stats.
Idaho...Jones caught six passes for 98 yards, including a long of 33 yards, vs. the Vandals...He also returned two punts for 30 yards.
Fresno State...The Spartan receiver hauled in five passes for 76 yards and a touchdown in San Jose State's 24-14 victory over the Bulldogs...Quarterback Adam Tafralis completed a 42-yard touchdown toss to Jones with 3:40 left in the second quarter, capping a six-play, 62-yard drive...Jones also added one rush for 7 yards and completed 1-of-3 passing attempts for 10 yards.
New Mexico (New Mexico Bowl)...Jones finshed the 2006 season in style, catching two touchdown passes in the Spartans' 20-12 victory over the Lobos, finishing the game with six receptions for 106 yards and two scores...With 3:59 remaining in the second quarter, Jones hauled in a 36-yard touchdown reception to cap a five-play, 69-yard drive...His second touchdown was a 24-yard reception with 4:33 left in the third quarter...He also rushed the ball once for 3 yards and returned one punt for 6 yards.
2005 SEASON
