Green Bay vs. Seattle
10/29/96 - Packers Win 31-10
Box Score
Opportunistic and productive on their first visit to Seattle since 1987, the Packers parlayed four takeovers into 24 points in subduing the Seahawks, 31-10.
After a somewhat tentative start, which found them required to punt after each of their first three possessions, they registered their first breakthrough just past the midpoint of the first quarter when free safety Eugene Robinson, returning to the Kingdome where he had spent 11 previous seasons in a Seahawk uniform, intercepted a Rick Mirer pass along the right sideline and returned it 39 yards to the Seattle 46.
Brett Favre flips a touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman |
Quarterback Brett Favre had the Packers in the end zone 5 plays later, hitting flanker Antonio Freeman in the right corner from 13 yards out.
The Seahawks mounted a drive of their own following the next kickoff, a 44-yard push which Reggie White abruptly ended at the Green Bay 30-yard line when he picked off a Mirer pass and rumbled 46 yards down the left sideline before having the Seahawks' Chris Warren punch the ball out of his arms - and out of bounds - at the Seattle 21-yard line, with the Packers retaining possession.
In this instance, the Packers had to be content with a field goal, 36-yard effort by Chris Jacke which padded the lead to 10-0.
Midway through the second quarter, linebacker Wayne Simmons forced a Mirer fumble and tackle Santana Dotson, picking up the loose football, trundled 8 yards before Joey Galloway felled him at the Seahawk 28.
Seven plays later, Favre found running back Dorsey Levens with a 4-yard strike in the right corner of the end zone. Jacke's conversion made it 17-0...but not for long. In just five plays following the kickoff, the Seahawks were on the scoreboard for the first time, Warren capping the drive with a 37-yard run off right guard for what to be Seattle's only touchdown of the game.
Out front 17-7 in the third quarter, the Packers went all the way on their first possession of the second half without benefit of a takeaway, Favre presiding over a 9-play, 77-yard drive that he finished off with a 10-yard pass to tight end Keith Jackson up the middle.
The Seahawks subsequently interrupted with a 44-yard Todd Peterson field goal before Doug Evans, posting the Packers' fourth interception of the afternoon, sprinted 63 yards down the left sideline to the Seattle 28 before stumbling to the turf and being downed.
Favre made the most of that final opportunity 5 plays later, hitting Freeman in the end zone with a 4-yard, underhand toss off a scramble.
Five defenders (and one helmet) close in on Chris Warren |
The fourth TD pass of the day for Favre, it marked the fifth time in his 5-year Packers career that he has thrown for four scores in a single game. He also has one 5-TD passing effort to his credit - against the Bears in November of 1995, a performance which shares the Packers' single-game record.
Freeman, who became Favre's primary target after Brooks suffered a concussion when struck in the jaw by Darryl Williams' helmet, maximized his opportunity. He closed out the day with the first 100-yard receiving game of his career, 7 receptions for 108 yards.
Running back Edgar Bennett spearheaded a 142-yard rushing effort, gaining 94 yards in 22 attempts, his best effort of the '96 season to date.
Defensively, the Packers registered 4 interceptions - one each by Eugene Robinson, Reggie White, Craig Newsome and Doug Evans - for the second time this season, matching their theft total against Tampa Bay in the season opener September 1. They closed out the day with 5 takeaways, including Santana Dotson's fumble recovery.
Statistically, cornerback Craig Newsome paced the defensive charge, stacking up 9 tackles, 7 of them solos. Nose tackle Gilbert Brown weighed in with 7, including 6 unassisted stops, and linebacker Wayne Simmons posted 6, including 2 solo tackles and 4 assists. |
