Green Bay vs. Chicago
10/6/96 - Packers Win 37-6
Box Score
With quarterback Brett Favre continuing to throw touchdown passes at a record pace, the Packers continued their recent mastery of the Bears with an impressive all-around performance highlighted by major contributions from all areas.
The offense, after being shut out in the first quarter, rolled up 20 points in the second period and added 14 more in the third quarter in putting the game out of reach.
The defense, holding the Bears' highly regarded Rashaan Salaam to a mere 43 yards in 20 carries, limited them to 243 yards overall and disrupted Chicago's air arm by intercepting 3 Dave Krieg passes.
One of those thefts, by right cornerback Doug Evans late in the second period, set up the Packers' third touchdown.
The special teams also made a major contribution to the cause, Don Beebe returning a third quarter kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown which swelled the Green Bay lead to a commanding 27-6 with only 4 minutes gone in the second half.
Favre fired 4 touchdown passes for the third time in 1996 - the seventh time in his career - in padding his season total to 20 in just 6 games, a remarkable performance.
One of Favre's 4 scoring throws came on an heroic, 50-yard, "Hail Mary" heave that split end Antonio Freeman came down with in the end zone as time expired in the first half.
It was one of two TD receptions for Freeman and figured prominently in his emerging with a career-high 146 yards on 7 receptions - his second consecutive 100-yard receiving effort and second consecutive 2-TD game. He caught 7 for 108 yards and 2 scores in Seattle a week earlier. |
