Green Bay vs. Tampa Bay
10/27/96 - Packers Win 13-7
Box Score
Although they held only a modest 13-0 lead at halftime, at that point the Packers appeared in control of the situation and en route to a relatively routine victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Santana Dotson stops his former mates |
It was not to be - for a variety of reasons, such as a lost fumble in the third quarter (on a Desmond Howard punt return), a long, time-consuming drive by the Bucs, Chris Jacke's miss of a 46-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth period, immediately followed by a 10-play, 63-yard Tampa Bay scoring drive which made things somewhat uncomfortable for the Green and Gold, reducing their lead to 13-7, which subsequently proved to be the final score.
The Packers had a last opportunity to put the Buccaneers away, reaching the Tampa Bay 31-yard line with 2 minutes remaining but, with fourth-and-two, Dorsey Levens was held to one yard and the football went over to the Bucs.
The Packers had pretty well dominated the first half, out-yarding the Floridians, 165 to 86, while amassing 16 first downs to Tampa Bay's 5, but were unable to make it pay satisfactory dividends on the scoreboard.
The notable exceptions occurred when Jacke kicked a 40-yard field goal to give the Packers a 3-0 lead at 9:19 of the first quarter, and on their next possession, when Levens capped an 8-play, 63-yard march with a one-yard burst over left guard for the score.
Jacke's field goal was set up by Reggie White's block of a Tommy Barnhardt punt, which put the Packers in operation at the Tampa Bay 32-yard line.
Shortly before the intermission, Jacke provided what proved to be the Packers' final points of the afternoon, kicking a 48-yard field goal with only 59 seconds left in the second quarter.
Offensively, the Packers exhibited good balance between run and pass, rushing for 129 yards in 37 attempts, and closing out the day with 169 net yards passing in the process of out-gaining the Bucs, 298 yards to 196.
Quarterback Brett Favre, accustomed to throwing touchdown passes with record frequency, went without one for the first time in 15 games - dating back to November 5, 1995, when - in a game against the Vikings at Minnesota, he last failed to throw for a score. Favre finished the afternoon with 19 completions in 31 attempts for 178 yards, with one interception.
LeRoy Butler and Brian Williams combine to sack Trent Dilfer |
Edgar Bennett paced the ground game with one of his better efforts of the season, gaining 93 yards in 17 attempts, a 4.7-yard average. He thus fell only one yard short of his '96 best, 94 yards, against Seattle September 29.
Meanwhile, on defense, strong safety LeRoy Butler had a large afternoon, sacking Tampa Bay quarterback Trent Dilfer once alone and in company with Brian Williams a second time for 14.5 yards in losses. He also emerged as the statistical leader of the defense with 11 tackles, 4 solos and 7 assists.
Linebackers George Koonce and Brian Williams also turned in double-digit tackle efforts, weighing in with 10 stops apiece.
