Kohls Countdown To Kickoff
Gameday / 1996 / December 8
Green Bay vs. Denver

12/8/96 - Packers Win 41-6
Box Score

The Packers found the Broncos, who had cantered into Lambeau Field possessing the NFL's best record (12-1), somewhat intractable in the first half and beyond. So intractable, in fact, that they led by a somewhat tenuous 13-6 score after Jason Elam delivered a 39-yard field goal for Denver early in the third period.

Quarterback Brett Favre then began to take over the game early in the third quarter, with the aid of Antonio Freeman. He and the second-year wideout, who had hooked up for one touchdown in the second period, collaborated on two more in the second half - beginning with a 51-yard pass-run maneuver in the fourth minute of the second half.

After Favre hit tight end Keith Jackson for a one-yard score early in the fourth quarter, Favre found Freeman with a 25-yard scoring strike midway through the period to mount a prohibitive, 34-6 Green Bay lead.

Another wideout, Don Beebe, made an end zone recovery of a fumble by teammate Travis Jervey for the Packers' final touchdown.

Favre passed for 280 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 20 of 38 attempts, with 2 interceptions, again demonstrating impressive "escapability" and a knack for making big plays on the run.

Another key figure in the offensive operations was third-year running back Dorsey Levens, who rushed for a career-high 86 yards in 14 carries and providing a potent complement to Favre's passing success.

The Packers amassed 379 yards of offense overall, 103 rushing and 276 passing.

The defense, meanwhile, was stifling Denver's offense. With John Elway sidelined by a hamstring injury, backup Bill Musgrave and his fellow Broncos were held to a net of 176 yards - 93 rushing and 83 passing - and without a touchdown, the fourth game this season Coordinator Fritz Shurmur's defenders have not given up a touchdown. Musgrave, frequently harried by Packers defenders, had to be content with 12 completions in 21 attempts for 101 yards.
