The bare statistics eloquently document the Packers'
dominance in Saturday night's 20-0 victory over the Dolphins in the 48th
Midwest Shrine Game -- the Green and Gold's first preseason shutout win
since 1989.
They outgained Miami overall, 404 yards to 250 (including a 64-yard bulge
in rushing, 160 to 96 and a 90-yard edge in passing, 244 to 154) and
averaged 6.2 yards per offensive play to only 4.4 for the visitors as both
teams substituted extensively over the course of the humid evening, which
saw the kickoff temperature shimmer at a sweltering 82 degrees, accompanied
by 70 percent humidity.
Quarterback Brett Favre, playing less than a quarter, completed 4 of the 6
passes he attempted for 76 yards -- two of them to flanker Antonio Freeman
for 69 yards -- before leaving the game with the Packers out front, 3-0.
Thirteen-year veteran Steve Bono, making his debut as Favre's backup, hit
on 9 of 17 attempts for 90 yards and one touchdown -- a 20-yard bullseye to
wide receiver Bill Schroeder in the right corner of the end zone in the
final minute of the first half. Doug Pederson was next up under center and
was an impressively precise marksman, completing 7 of 10 attempts for 80
yards, and rookie quarterback Ronnie McAda of Army, making his bow in a
Green Bay uniform, completed 2 of the 3 passes he attempted for 8 yards.

Third-year pro Travis Jervey, who has quickly taken on a more prominent
role at halfback following the injury to Bennett, mounted a career-high,
76-yard rushing performance to pace the Packers' 160-yard ground attack,
averaging an imposing 15.2 yards for his 5 attempts. Recently acquired
Aaron Hayden, the former San Diego Charger, was next up with 37 yards in 7
second half carries.
Rookie placekicker Brett Conway, the team's third-round selection in this
year's draft out of Penn State, had mixed results in his Packers debut. He
boomed the game's opening kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone but averaged
a more modest 58.5 yards per KO on his two other efforts (70 yards is the
desired distance) and after making his first two field goal attempts, from
20 and 24 yards, was wide right with his third and 39-yard final effort
with 1:17 remaining in the game.

The defense, which led the league in 1996, showed little evidence of rust,
not permitting the Dolphins beyond Green Bay's 25-yard line during the
course of the evening. Miami made its deepest penetration early in the
second quarter, reaching the 26 in a 4th-and-1 situation, where Santana
Dotson effectively resolved the issue by stopping Dolphin running back
Bernie Parmalee for no gain on fourth down.
Although Seth Joyner was not a starter, the recently-acquired linebacker
emerged as the leading tackler on the Green Bay defense with 6 stops, 4 of
them solos. Defensive back Roderick Mullen, a training camp standout, was
right behind with 5 tackles, followed by linebacker Lamont Hollinquest and
free safety Eugene Robinson with 4 apiece.
