Green Bay vs. Oakland
8/8/97 - Packers Win 37-24 (Preseason)
 Derrick Mayes
|
Leading by a modest 13-10 margin at halftime, despite
amassing over 300 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes, the Packers put
up a pair of touchdowns during a 5-minute span in the third quarter to pull
away from the Oakland Raiders and cruise to a comfortable, 37-24 victory.
With the offense mounting its most explosive performance of the preseason
to date, the Packers rolled up 522 yards while employing all three
quarterbacks -- Brett Favre, Steve Bono and Doug Pederson -- and scoring on
drives ranging from 21 to 97 yards.
En route, two talented second-year pros, wide receiver Derrick Mayes and
running back Chris Darkins, piled up 291 of those yards between them, Mayes
snaring the eye-opening total of 12 passes for 139 yards and Darkins,
displaying exceptional speed in turning the corner, accumulating 112 yards
in only 8 carries for a remarkable 14.0-yard average per attempt.
Displaying exemplary offensive balance, the Packers rushed 30 times for 181
yards and an imposing 6.0-yard average, and completed 28 of 49 passes for
341 net yards.
Favre presided over the 97-yard drive, escorting the Packers from their own
3-yard-line into the Oakland end zone in 12 plays for Green Bay's first
touchdown of the evening, completing the project with an extraordinary,
5-yard bullet to Mayes in the right quadrant of the end zone while being
felled by Raider defensive end Lance Johnstone.

Bono, warming to his task by conducting a pair of field goal drives in the
second quarter (21- and 44-yard successes by Ryan Longwell, kicking in the
absence of the sidelined Brett Conway), capped his stint by directing a
10-play, 64-yard scoring march in the third quarter. He concluded the
effort with a 3-yard toss to rookie fullback Emory Smith in the right
corner of the end zone midway through the period.

Taking over with Green Bay leading 20-10, Pederson quickly set about
accumulating 17 more points. Provided with enviable field position at the
Oakland 21-yard-line by way of a Keith McKenzie interception, he had the
Packers in the end zone in 7 plays, hitting Mayes with an 11-yard strike in
the middle of the end zone with 3:24 remaining in the period.

After the Raiders interrupted with their second touchdown of the contest,
by way of a one-yard run by fullback Joe Aska, Pederson put together an
8-play, 68-yard field goal drive, Longwell finishing the march with a
34-yard success.
One exchange later, Darkins single-handedly closed out the Packers' scoring
midway through the fourth quarter. Exploding around the Raiders' right
flank and down the sideline, he raced 53 yards to the Oakland 9-yard-line
before being run out of bounds.
Called upon again, he bolted up the middle for 3 yards and, a play later,
completed the solo process by sweeping right end into the end zone.
Longwell's final conversion made it 37-17 and the game, for all practical
purposes, was over.

through the third period, hit on 14 of 24 throws for 164 yards and a
touchdown, with one interception, and Pederson, finishing up, completed 3
of his 8 passing attempts for 26 yards and one score.
