Kohls Countdown To Kickoff
Gameday / 1997 / August 8 / Green Bay
Green Bay vs. Oakland - Post Game Quotes - Green Bay

Preseason - Packers Win 37-24

HEAD COACH MIKE HOLMGREN:
  • On whether he was 'more or less pleased' after seeing video of the game: "There were some good things in the game. And then there were some things that I did not like, and I made those very clear. "I think it was a good game from the standpoint of, we won the football game, scored some points, got some yards, but yet we made a pot full of mistakes, too. We had 10 penalties, which is inexcusable. We threw an interception and Bones (quarterback Steve Bono) knows that he shouldn't have done that -- in that situation down there.
"And the defense, which is a fine, fine defense, you know, allowed a 71-yard touchdown run, so there was enough in that film so I could get after 'em pretty good today, and just to kind of keep 'em focused and keep 'em going."
  • On Derrick Mayes' 12-catch performance: "He had a good night...We were planning on playing him a lot and I told him before the game he had to show tonight...And he did. And I think I'm going to be pleased after I see the film."
  • On most of Mayes' catches having been for first downs or touchdowns: "That's a pretty good deal -- if you're making first downs and touchdown catches. But I think he made some good catches...and he ran well after catching the ball. And, as many as he had, I thought he could have had a couple more...Derrick knows this -- I'm going to push him hard all season. And he's a talented man."
  • On the offense as a whole: "Well, we've been moving the ball in all three games. We scored a little bit more tonight. But we're not where we want to be yet....But that's what we have the preseason for -- and that's what you have training camp for. The fact that we had more points tonight, though, I'm pleased with that."
  • On rookie Ross Verba's maiden performance: "I couldn't really tell you, honestly. You know, I don't see very well from where I am on the sideline. He went in and he got to play a lot, so I'm hoping when I turn on the film I see good things. He had a good week of practice. He's still behind where he should be but, you know, I think he had some fun out there."
  • On what happened with placekicker Brett Conway: "Brett, in the pregame warmups, kicked the ball and got some tightness in his thigh, and so we just decided to take the safe road and kick (Ryan) Longwell...and he had a good game."
  • On Conway's reaction to the injury: ''Here he is--he wanted to redeem himself -- and now this thing happens. He was probably pushing a little too hard during the week and maybe got a little too tired...But, you know, he's a good guy and he'll get his chances."
  • On whether Longwell might be a major candidate: "Brett, you know, is going to be our kicker. But Ryan's a good kicker, too. And, typically, in camp -- when you have a couple good guys -- many times other teams get to see him and he gets another chance. We'll make the decision at the end. But Brett's going to be our kicker."
  • On Brett Favre's 'Falling' Touchdown Pass to Mayes in the first quarter: "He's a big, strong man. There are a few quarterbacks in the league that are big and strong like that, and you can't just grab a jersey. They can spin around and still flick it in there. And we were close enough that he could pop it up in the air...and our receiver kept it alive. And so, yeah, it was an amazing play."
  • On the play of Chris Darkins: "He was one of the young fellows I talked about prior to the game that have to...it's getting close now to where we have to make some decisions. And Chris stepped foward tonight. I don't know how he blocked and those things, but he certainly showed his speed and he showed his running ability. (But) he's got a long way to go. And, you know, that hasn't been finalized yet. But it certainly was a step in the right direction for him."
  • On the final number of running backs to be kept: "I don't know how that's going to fall, exactly. In the past, we've kept either five or six. But we'll see. The special teams, as I've said many times, will be the determining factor most of the time."
  • On why Travis Jervey 'didn't play a lot': "That was one of the reasons (looking at other running backs). And then Travis had been nicked up a little during the week with his rib--that pull he had. And it worked out well...we didn't have to use Travis a lot. He made a couple plays in there, too, though."
  • On whether 'It's nice to get the flavor of winning on the road': "Well, I think every little experience like that helps. And that's one of our chief focuses this training camp and this year -- is how we do on the road...how you handle playing on the road, and traveling and so on. So, for a first game, it came out okay...yeah."
  • On Jerald Sowell having had 'another decent game'; "Yeah, he's a good football player. And he's doing fine. I thipnk he's been very consistent -- maybe as consistent as any back we have. So it's going to be a very difficult decision in the running back area -- just like at wide receiver."
  • On whether he had talked to Desmond Howard: "Yeah, I talked to him after the game. I told Nolan (Packers special teams coach Nolan Cromwell) not to kick the ball to him, but he wanted to do it anyway...I wished Desmond well. It was a great contract for him (with Oakland) and his family and everything. We miss him, but he did what he had to do."
  • On Robert Brooks wearing a white jersey now in practice: "He's going to practice--have a normal practice week and then we're going to play him in the game (against the Bills). You know, it's that time. So, for the next couple days...I suppose every time that he gets banged or something, you know, everyone will catch their breath just a little bit. But, physically, our medical staff has said he's ready to play, and now so we're just going to cut him loose."

Derrick Mayes (on whether he had been in a zone): "No, not in a zone. But I felt that I was in my domain, which is catch the ball. But I've been doing it for years, so it was nothing new."

  • On his performance as a whole: "I felt good. You know, now it's about finding a way. And trying to capitalize on some of the things that I do have...And try to correct the things that maybe weren't just right."
  • On Brett Favre's 'falling' throw to him for his first touchdown: "You learn that in practice. You know what's going to happen. You know he's going to stay in the pocket as long as he can. And as long as you get open, chances are he's going to find you."
  • On whether his performance had been 'vintage Derrick Mayes': "Vintage Derrick Mayes?...I don't know. I've never considered myself as a vintage, so I wouldn't know what that is. I mean, I know that's the most balls I've ever caught in a game. (But), you know, I come from a school where they only throw it about eight times (a game)."
Chris Darkins (on his 112-yard rushing performance): "It's a matter of patience. When opportunities come, you just take 'em...The offensive line did a good job of giving me opportunities to make yards.
  • On his 53-yard run: "It was a great seal block by the tight end (Reggie Johnson). And Jerald (fullback Jerald Sowell) had a good block, too. And the hole just opened up."
  • On his speed: "If I'd run seriously, I could run a 4.3 (in the '40'). I run 4.4 consistently."

Keith McKenzie (on his interception, which set up the Packers' second touchdown after he initially deflected David Klingler's pass into the air): "I'm not sure but I think it bounced off Seth's (Joyner) helmet...When we practice, they tell you to go to the ball. So when I saw it, I just went to the ball. It wasn't a hard interception to make. There was a (Raider) receiver beside me and an offensive lineman on my back--I was just trying to hold on to the football."
