Kohls Countdown To Kickoff
Gameday / 1997 / August 8 / Noteworthy
Green Bay vs. Oakland

8/8/97 - Packers win 37-24 (Preseason)

NOTE-WORTHY:
  • Friday night's victory evened the Packers' all-time, preseason won-lost record against the Raiders at 3-3.
  • It was the Packers' first visit to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum since 1976, when they met the Raiders in a regular-season game, Oakland emerging with an 18-14 victory on that occasion.
  • The Packers had amassed 302 net yards by halftime, including 258 passing and 44 rushing.
  • Chris Darkins' 53-yard run against the Raiders was the Packers' longest run from scrimmage of the preseason. The previous "longest," 49 yards, belonged to Travis Jervey, who posted his excursion in the preseason opener against Miami.
  • Derrick Mayes came breathtakingly close to making 14 receptions in Friday night's contest. He was ruled out of bounds on two early catches he made, both in the first quarter.
  • Mayes was making his first start in a Green Bay uniform.
  • Third-year safety Roderick Mullen paced the Packers' defense with six solo tackles and one pass defensed. He also had a seventh unassisted tackle on special teams coverage.
  • Free agent placekicker Ryan Longwell, hastily pressed into service minutes before game time -- following the discovery that Brett Conway had developed tightness in the thigh of his kicking leg -- turned in a workmanlike performance on short notice. He not only made all three field goals he attempted (21, 44 and 34 yards), and all four conversions he attempted, but averaged just under 61 yards for 8 kickoffs, booming one a yard deep in the Oakland end zone and reaching the goal line on another. Longwell actually missed the first field goal he attempted, a 25-yard second quarter effort which sailed wide right, but the Raiders drew a 5-yard penalty for having 12 men on the field and he made the "re-kick" from 21 yards.
  • Rookie linebacker Anthony Hicks posted 2 special teams tackles before being sidelined by a quad muscle strain.
  • Tackle Santana Dotson and linebacker Joe Cummings authored the Packers' two sacks against the Raiders, Dotson felling Oakland quarterback David Klingler for a 10-yard loss late in the second quarter and Cummings dropping Donald Hollas for an identical loss in the fourth period.
  • Former Chicago Bear Marcus Spears made his second straight start at right tackle on offense, stepping in for the injured Earl Dotson (knee).
  • Dorsey Levens (offense), Eugene Robinson (defense) and Terry Mickens (special teams) were Packers captains for the Oakland contest.
  • Napoleon Kaufman's 70-yard scoring run for the Raiders' first touchdown in the opening quarter was the first touchdown the Packers' defense has allowed this preseason.
  • Raider quarterback Jeff George's 52-yard completion to James Jett on Oakland's second offensive play of the game also was the longest pass play the Packers have permitted to date.
