Green Bay vs. Tampa Bay - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
Regular Season - Packers Win 21-16
POST-GAME QUOTES: GREEN BAY PACKERS
HEAD COACH MIKE HOLMGREN: (on whether he felt fortunate to win the game) "I don't think so. It was a
hard-fought game by both teams. We made a few too many mistakes and gave
Tampa Bay too many opportunities. But those type of things even out. It was
just a great division game."
(on the impact of Gabe Wilkins'
touchdown) "It was so huge for us because we had just lost a fumble on a
quarterback sneak. Our defense was in a tough spot there -- talk about a
mood change, a momentum change. It was obviously the play of the game."
(on the play of Reggie White)
"Coming in, I think he was feeling like he wasn't doing his part and we
talked about that. Maybe we can help him by giving him fewer plays. But he
can still do it."
(on the play of the offensive line) "I thought they battled and that's all
you can ask. These guys want to play. They might not be as experienced or
as strong as you'd like, but they allowed us to win the football game."
(on whether Bill Schroeder
gained some confidence today) "Bill never lacked confidence and that was
part of the problem. I think he did get my message. He played today and he
played very well."
(on the lack of offense in the second half) "We didn't make plays when we
had to. We're still doing things that we need to clean up. It was a great
win but I know there are some things I can show these guys."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE: (on whether he was surprised the game was so close) "No. They're 5-0 and
they're a good football team. They're at a point where we were a couple of
years ago. They are well-coached and they have good talent. I'm surprised
we jumped out to a 21-3 lead."
(on the severity of his mood swing after Wilkins' score) "As far as you can
swing. You fumble the ball on a quarterback sneak and on the next play your
defensive lineman intercepts it and looks like O.J. (Simpson) running
through the airport. I thought I was down on the fumble, but they said I
was on top of a Tampa player and apparently that means you're not down."
(on the play of the offensive line) "I thought they did a pretty good job.
For the most part I had time to throw. At the end they got a couple of
sacks, but I should have thrown the ball away."
(on the progression of the offense) "There are spots where we really look
good and there are other times where we don't look bad... but we move the
ball, stop, move the ball, stop. When we have those chances, we've got to
make the play. We're not doing that right now."
(on who neutralized Warren Sapp) "I guess it was Aaron (Taylor) and Adam (Timmerman). Warren is a great
player, but he talked a bit this week and you don't do that."
(on the two touchdown passes to Antonio Freeman) "The first one
was not a touchdown play, but a third-down conversion play. It was
man-to-man and he beat his guy. I made the throw but that doesn't matter if
'Free' doesn't beat his guy. The second one was a play we just put in this
week. I threw it as hard as I could and I was surprised he caught it.
'Free' made a good play."
(on the atmosphere of the game) "It was like a playoff game. It had that
atmosphere, the intensity was there. I assume Tampa Bay will be there at
the end."
DEFENSIVE END GABE WILKINS: (on his touchdown) "It happened so fast, I don't remember every little
detail. I could see them coming to my side of the defense, and then the
ball was right there in my face. And usually quarterbacks will try to cut
you, so I thought, 'If I get in the air and get past him, then there's
nobody.' But I didn't know it was that far."
(what was he thinking after he got by Trent Dilfer) "Run! That's all I was
thinking. I thought if I made it to the end zone, I'd be okay. I didn't
hear anything but the crowd."
(on whether he saved the ball) "My mom's got the ball from my other
touchdown. I'll probably keep this one."
(on the Bucs' improvement) "They have a good attitude about things this
year. They're a great team, they're doing things that we've never seen them
do. But we're the Packers and we're trying to build a tradition here. We
don't want to lose at home."
LINEBACKER SETH JOYNER: (on his first game back) "I wasn't really out there too much, but it felt
good being out there. I would like to play more, but the situation just
didn't dictate it. I'm just glad I was able to contribute to the
victory."
CORNERBACK DOUG EVANS: (on whether most games will be this close this season) "We're the defending
Super Bowl champs -- everybody wants to knock us off. It's not going to be
a cakewalk. But we know what we have to do -- we have to play hard the
whole game."
