Dorsey Levens
Dorsey Levens celebrates 1 yard touchdown reception
As so often has been the case, quarterback Brett Favre was the catalyst in the Packers' latest success, passing for all three touchdowns in their fifth victory -- two of them to tight end Mark Chmura.

Things were not overly positive in the early going, however, the Bears moving out to a 10-0 first quarter lead. After converting a Walt Harris interception of a Favre pass into a touchdown -- by way of a one-yard, Raymont Harris run -- the Midway Monsters added a 41-yard Jeff Jaeger field goal to cap a 57-yard drive engineered by Bears quarterback Erik Kramer.

The Packers ended their scoring drought midway through the second quarter, Favre hitting Chmura with a 2-yard pass 9 yards deep in the end zone, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

They next evened the interception score with the Bears, linebacker Brian Williams picking off a Kramer throw and returning it 25 yards to Chicago's 28-yard line. This time, Favre finished off the scoring process by passing one yard in the right flat to Dorsey Levens, who swept into the end zone untouched. Rookie Ryan Longwell's second conversion gave the Packers a 14-10 lead, one they held at the intermission.

The Bears, however, marched 73 yards in 12 plays to a go-ahead touchdown after receiving the third quarter kickoff. Kramer himself scoring, off a three-yard quarterback draw. Jaeger's PAT put the Bears up, 17-14.

In the waning minutes of the third period, Favre again moved the Packers out front, presiding over an 8-play, 55-yard drive, a march he climaxed by firing a second scoring strike to Chmura, who pulled in the football at the 4-yard line and barged into the end zone to complete a 12-yard collaboration.

Still nurturing hopes of an upset, the Bears set off on an 11-play, 76-yard drive which -- with the aid of a 35-yard pass interference penalty on Packers cornerback Tyrone Williams -- carried them all the way to the Green Bay one-yard line.

There, with the Bears going for it in a fourth down-and-one situation, the Packers' Gabe Wilkins and Bob Kuberski rose up to stop Kramer a half-yard short of the goal line and end the threat.

Two possessions later, the Green and Gold put together a decisive field goal drive, triggered by Bernardo Harris's first career interception. The pass, to the Bears' Raymont Harris, popped into the air when the Chicago running back was hit by Brian Williams, and Harris picked it off at the Bears' 24-yard line.

Four plays later, Longwell kicked a 37-yard field goal -- into a stiff wind -- and the Packers lengthened their lead to 24-17.

But the Bears had yet another "life." This time, Kramer guided them 67 yards to the end zone in 6 plays, hitting wideout Chris Penn with a 22-yard strike down the left sideline for the score with 1:54 remaining in the game.

In an "all-or-nothing" maneuver, the Bears opted for a 2-point conversion attempt and Kramer's pass to Harris in the right flat was incomplete.

Favre, employing 7 different receivers, completed 19 passes for 177 yards, with one interception, emerging from the contest without being sacked. Split end Antonio Freeman was his most frequent target, gathering in 7 passes for 86 yards.

Levens, off to a highly productive start, was well on his way to a 100-yard rushing day with 74 yards in only 12 carries in the first half, a 6.2-yard average, but was unable to return for the second half because of a clavicle injury.
