Kohls Countdown To Kickoff
Gameday / 1997 / November 9 / St Louis
Green Bay vs. St. Louis - Postgame Quotes - St. Louis

Regular Season - Packers Win 17-7

HEAD COACH DICK VERMEIL:
"The penalties were a problem, they have been for weeks. It is very frustrating, there are way too many. Maybe we are trying too hard. The effort we gave was good -- we played hard.

"The defense came back strong. It took a while for the offensive line to settle down. Tony (Banks) was getting banged around.

"Banks suffered a muscle strain under his left shoulder; he was losing power. (Mark) Rypien didn't change the game. He's had a lot of experience, and did a real nice job.

"Once the offensive line settled down, they did a pretty good job.

The dropped passes hurt. Green Bay didn't (drop passes) -- that's why they are the World Champions.

The penalties were spread around, but they hurt us.

"The noise bothered us a few times. Plus we're not used to playing the World Champions at home.

"The officiating had a rough day.

"The low kick for the field goal was not a factor in the outcome.

"We were playing hard. We figured holding them to 17 points, we had a chance to win.

"We're not the same caliber as they are -- they're a world champion team.

"Holding them to 17 points is a positive; no one else has done that.

"Reggie White and Gilbert Brown gave us some problems."

QUARTERBACK MARK RYPIEN:
"We were very frustrated. we thought we would come out with a victory, especially the way the defense played. We didn't make enough plays at the right time. The bottom line is, we just didn't get it down there. The missed field goal burst our bubble."

(on how he threw the ball) "I felt good physically. It's not easier the older you get. Also, the defensive style has changed.

(on Amp Lee's catch and run) "He made a great move -- that was a big play. He will continue to do that. We just didn't capitalize on it."

QUARTERBACK TONY BANKS:
"The penalties hurt us, but we are tired of making excuses. It's just a lack of concentration.

We have to continue to improve. We have to make the plays -- we're not doing that.

"Our defense was ready to play; at the half we were still in the game.

"Green Bay did some different stunts which we hadn't practiced against. They worked for them.

"Those 15 penalties were hard to beat."

WIDE RECEIVER ISAAC BRUCE:
"They came in and controlled the second half."

TIGHT END ERNIE CONWELL:
(on Mark Rypien) "He came in and took charge -- he took charge of the huddle. He is a good leader. It's up to us to make things happen."
