Green Bay vs. Denver
08/24/98 - Packers lose 34-31
 |
| Derrick Mayes crosses the goal line near the end of the first half |
Monday night's alleged "rematch" of Super Bowl XXXII, played in Denver instead of San Diego was somewhat reminiscent of last January's original. It, like the "Big Dance," was punctuated by big plays and turnovers. There were, for example, a game-opening interception by the Packers' LeRoy Butler and his subsequent 30-yard runback for the first touchdown of the game; an 80-yard scoring pass from Denver quarterback John Elway to wideout Rod Smith; a seven-yard fumble return for a score by the Broncos' Tyrone Braxton; a 65-yard scoring punt return by Denver's Darrien Gordon; and a 99-yard scoring kickoff return by the Packers' Roell Preston.

There also were more routine contributions like Ryan Longwell's 44-yard second-quarter field goal; an 11-yard Brett Favre touchdown pass to Derrick Mayes; a one-yard scoring run by Denver's Derek Loville; a 35-yard field goal by the Broncos' Jason Elam; and a one-yard scoring run by the Packers' Raymont Harris.

All of these developments found the Super Bowl finalists tied at 31-all late in the fourth quarter.
At that juncture, Elam finally settled the issue by kicking a 49-yard field goal with 3:10 left in the game. Although the Packers mounted a modest threat following the kickoff, Elam's effort was enough to carry the evening.
Favre, playing the first half and the Packers' first offensive series in the third quarter, had his best outing of the preseason, completing 13 of 23 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown.
Doug Pederson, who then finished up at quarterback, also was effective, completing 10 of 19 passes for 74 yards, without an interception.
The Packers' efforts to mount a representative running game met with mixed success. Travis Jervey, starting at running back in the absence of holdout Dorsey Levens, had to settle for 18 yards in 13 carries-after averaging an imposing 10.5 yards per attempt during the Packers' first three preseason games-while Raymont Harris had a productive day, rushing for 47 yards in 6 attempts, a 7.8-yard average.
