Green Bay vs. Denver - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay

Pre-Season - Packers Lose 34-31

COACH HOLMGREN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS:

(on the performance and the result) "The penalty situation (the Packers were whistled for 11 infractions) certainly is a concern. We just have to keep working at correcting it. We just have to get better at that. And right now we're not. We're a pretty sloppy football team right now.

"We're doing some good things. Great effort tonight, I thought. They played hard‹the guys played hard. We did some good things, some good individual efforts. But I didn't like the penalties."

(on LeRoy Butler's early big play, a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown) "That's what we have to have. Now, I mean LeRoy Butler's an outstanding football player and he made the play.

"Our first team defense, I thought, did a nice job. They got a bomb on us, which was a heck of a play by John (Elway) and the receiver. And there was a turnover. But, otherwise, I thought our defense played pretty well."

(on the running game) "We were trying to establish the running game. I wanted (Travis) Jervey to carry the ball. I don't know how many carries we had, but we had a lot of plays in the first half. And we just have to keep that thing going."

(on the crowd factor) "Their fans here are wonderful. I think our fans are wonderful and they're wonderful here. You kind of knew it was going to be that type of crowd. And that was good for us. It's good to come into a place like Denver, play a football game, get the players used to that. Let 'em hear some people who really root for their football team."

(on whether Roell Preston made the team with his 99-yard, scoring kickoff return) "Let me sit on the airplane and talk about that. These (the roster cuts) are the most difficult things I do. I've told you that before and I'm not going to flip out some answer right now."

(on his discussion with the officials coming off the field at the end of the first half) "There were a couple of calls there (and) they're good about it‹you can talk to them...I just needed an explanation as to what our guys were doing and what we weren't doing, because this penalty thing was driving me cuckoo. So 'what are we doing?' And then we'll try and fix it...And that was all."

(on the effect of penalties) "They break your momentum, certainly. I want to think that if it weren't for a couple penalties, there were a lot of yards gained and brought back. But that's also part of football. And we had better fix that, because you can't play a team like the Broncos or anybody‹but especially a good football team like the Broncos‹you don't have a chance to win if you have that many penalties...It's too hard.

"(But) we'll work on it. You know, things come up‹they've come up the last seven years and we don't hide from 'em. We just roll up our sleeves and fix it...And we'll treat this like we've treated everything else around here."

THE PLAYER PERSPECTIVE:

Quarterback Doug Pederson (on his and the team's second-half performance): "We had a good touchdown drive. And we had plenty of time at the end, but the penalties hurt us. I thought we had a chance‹I really did. But the bottom line is the penalties...we got a little sloppy.

"But even the last couple minutes, I thought we had a shot. We were moving the ball. But then we got a little sloppy.

"The penalties...it's got to stop."

Running back Travis Jervey (on whether he expects to start in the Packers' league opener against Detroit September 6): "If Dorsey (Levens) is not here, yes. But the guy's a Pro Bowl back. If the guy comes in, it's his job."

(on how he felt about his performance against the Broncos): "I have to look at the film to see if there are some things I could have done. That's a great defense, that's for sure. They have a lot of team speed."

Returner/wide receiver Roell Preston (on whether he thought he made the team with his 99-yard, scoring kickoff return): "I hope...I'm just trying to be part of it."

(on when he thought he would go all the way on the kickoff return): "When I got through the middle and close to the kicker, I knew I was going to score some kind of way.

"Whether I'm lined up as a returner or as a receiver, I'm thinking about making big plays...I'm just thinking big."

(on his "support" group): "We always have great blocking on our return teams. We have a great scheme. And the others want it (a scoring return) just as much as the runner does."
