Green Bay vs. Miami
8/28/98 - Packers lose 21-7
 |
Derrick Mayes battles Terrell Buckley for the ball
|
The Dolphins, ignited by John Avery's 41-yard return of the opening kickoff to their own 45-yard line, had things pretty much their own way for most of the evening after parlaying that early field position into
a 12-play, 55-yard scoring drive en route to a 21-7 victory.
Late in the second quarter, Jason Taylor's interception of a Doug Pederson pass, parlayed with a 38-yard runback to the Green Bay 26-yard line, triggered Miami's second touchdown and sent the Dolphins into the intermission with a 14-0 lead.
They subsequently padded their lead to 21-0 midway through the third quarter on a 4-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Damon Huard to tight end Hendrick Lusk.
With quarterback Brett Favre playing only into the fourth minute of the second quarter and Pederson finishing up the first half, Head Coach Mike Holmgren called upon rookie Matt Hasselbeck to preside under the center in the second half and he responded by leading the Packers to their lone touchdown. It came on a 31-yard pass to first-year receiver Ronnie Anderson in the tenth minute of the fourth quarter.

Ronnie Anderson Touchdown |
Hasselbeck, who completed 5 of 13 passes for 119 yards, had hit Anderson
with a 50-yard strike just minutes earlier, adroitly escaping from pressure
in the end zone to deliver the football, but he was intercepted by former
Packer Terrell Buckley three plays later.
