For the second week in a row, the Packers dominated the statistics against their opponents - this time in their Sunday visit to Charlotte's Ericsson Stadium - but, as was the case in Cincinnati a week earlier, did not find their huge advantage reflected on the scoreboard.
They amassed a season-high 487 yards while holding the host Panthers to 230, yet only twice during the course of a long, hot afternoon (the game required 3 hours and 29 minutes to play and the field temperature was 102 degrees at the opening kickoff) did they lead by more than a touchdown before ultimately prevailing, 37-30.
This surprising state of affairs stemmed in part from a two of first half turnovers, interceptions which the Panthers converted into a pair of touchdowns - one on a 16-yard scoring runback by cornerback Eric Davis.
Fortunately, quarterback Brett Favre - later to be intercepted a third time along the way - was able to overcome those misadventures with his most productive performance of the season. Passing for 388 yards - the third highest single-game total of his seven-year Packers career - he unfurled five touchdown passes to tie the team record for the third time, three of them going to third-year wideout Derrick Mayes.

Favre launched three of his scoring throws in the first half while overcoming an early 10-0 deficit, hitting tight end Mark Chmura with a 25-yard scoring strike, Mayes with a 21-yard TD pitch and tight end Tyrone Davis with a 20-yard scoring toss.

These efforts enabled the Packers to pull even at 20-20 going into the intermission.
They then set about building a lead in the third quarter with a 4-yard TD pass to Mayes and a 41-yard Ryan Longwell field goal, to mount a 30-20 advantage.

Here, however, the Panthers interrupted with a prodigious, 56-yard field goal by their left-footed placekicker, John Kasay, reducing the Packers' margin to 30-23 early in the fourth quarter.
Things subsequently appeared to be under control when Favre found Mayes with a third scoring throw - this time a 33-yarder - in the seventh minute of the fourth quarter. With Longwell's conversion, it was 37-23.

But the Panthers were not ready to concede. After one exchange of punts, they moved 70 yards in 11 plays for their third touchdown of the afternoon, quarterback Kerry Collins hitting wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad with a 15-yard touchdown pass. Kasay's conversion cut the Packers' lead to 30-23, with 4:17 remaining in the game.
When the Packers were required to punt on their next and final possession, the Panthers mounted another substantial threat in the last two minutes, reaching Green Bay's 5-yard-line with two seconds remaining. Collins, under a heavy rush, saw his fourth-down pass fall incomplete, however, as time ran out, sealing the Packers' fourth consecutive victory.
Defensively, Reggie White and rookie Vonnie Holliday played havoc with Carolina quarterback Kerry Collins. Each sacked Collins twice, Holliday also being credited with two passes defensed and White with one pass defensed and one forced fumble.
