Green Bay vs. New York Jets
08/14/99 - Packers win 27-16
 |
| Derrick Mayes hauls in a 13-yard TD pass from Brett Favre. |
The Green Bay Packers opened the 1999 preseason with a 27-16 victory
over the defending AFC East Champion New York Jets in front of 59,815
fans in Lambeau Field.
After falling behind 3-0, the Packer offense took the field for the
first time. Dorsey Levens quickly gave the fans something to cheer
about as he took the first handoff for 48 yards. Brett Favre sliced the
Jets defense with completions to Derrick Mayes and Bill Schroeder. On a
third and nine from the Jets 13-yard line, Favre scrambled in the
pocket, and found a cutting Mayes in the middle of the end zone for a
touchdown. Mayes then displayed a new 'Lambeau Leap,' as he jumped on
top of the wall in a single bound. Favre would finish with 4
completions for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Rick Mirer replaced Favre in the second quarter, and on his first play
found himself scrambling for 20 yards. Mirer finished with 5
completions for 63 yards. The Packers found themselves trailing at
halftime 16-7.
Starting the second half as the field general for the Green and Gold was
Matt Hasselbeck. His running mates were Edwin Watson and Jahine Arnold.
The three of them would mount a comeback. The comeback started with a
40-yard runback of the kickoff by De'Mond Parker to the Packers' 45-yard
line. Hasselbeck's first drive took 9 plays, traveling 32 yards
culminating in a 41 yard field goal by Ryan Longwell.
The defense held the Jets' offense, highlighted by a sack by safety
Scott McGarrahan. The threesome would strike again. Watson ran up the
middle for 5 yards. Hasselbeck found the rumbling running back for a 7
yard completion. Then Hasselbeck would find Arnold cutting across the
middle. Arnold made the catch and turned upfield. All he would see is
daylight, as the play covered 67 yards, and after the extra point, the
Packers took the lead, 17-16.
The next offensive series, Watson rushed the ball 5 times for 38 yards,
including a 14 yard scamper to the Jets' 25-yard line. Hasselbeck then
threaded a needle to a leaping Jeff Thomason for a 22 yard touchdown
strike. Watson would finish with 47 yards on 8 carries. Hasselbeck led
all passers with 7 completions on 11 attempts for 119 yards and 2
touchdowns.
Exit Edwin Watson, enter Basil Mitchell. Mitchell carried the ball 7
times for 66 yards, including a sweep around right end which covered 52
yards.
Aaron Brooks finished the game, completing his only pass for 9 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Jets did not have one 50-yard
rusher. Mike McKenzie led the way with 5 tackles. The Packers defense
harassed Jets' quarterbacks all night, as Vaughn Booker, Scott
McGarrahan, Chris Reed, and Cletidus Hunt all registered sacks.
The Packers take on the defending Super Bowl champion, Denver Broncos,
on Monday Night Football on ABC from Camp Randall Stadium in Madison,
Wisconsin.
