The Green Bay Packers defeated the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos by the score of 27-12 in front of 78,184 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.

The game started peculiarly as Jason Elam tried to catch the Packers' kickoff return team off guard with an onside kick. Edwin Watson was not fooled, as he fell on the ball giving the Packers possession at the Denver 47 yard line. Brett Favre completed 3 passes for 26 yards to Dorsey Levens, Bill Schroeder and William Henderson. Ryan Longwell came on and hit a 47 yard field goal to give the Green and Gold an early 3-0 lead.

After the kickoff, Denver had possession at their own 33 yard line. Craig Newsome intercepted the first play from scrimmage, giving the Packers the ball at the Broncos' 46 yard line. On the ensuing play, Favre completed a pass to Dorsey Levens for 9 yards, but hit his thumb on a Bronco helmet forcing him to leave the game. Matt Hasselbeck relived him and completed the drive with a 13 yard touchdown strike to Tyrone Davis, staking the home team to a 10-0 lead.

Hasselbeck once again led a touchdown drive. Hasselbeck went 6-9 including a 12 yard touchdown pass to Derrick Mayes who once again displayed his unique version of the Lambeau Leap, jumping to the top of the wall surrounding the field.

The ensuing Bronco drive looked promising for the visitors. Brister led his team down to the Packer 7 yard line, but the defense prevailed, stopping four straight running plays forcing a turnover on downs. Darren Sharper stopping Derek Loville on the final play.

The defense shined again. This time it was Keith McKenzie taking a starring role, as he sacked Brister, forced a fumble forcing the Broncos to punt.

Mike McKenzie showed a burst of speed as he closed a small gap between him and Ed McCaffrey, as he knocked away what looked to be a touchdown pass. The Bronco drive stalled and Tom Rouen was called on to punt. Jahine Arnold returned the 46 yard kick 52 yards staking the Packers to first and ten at the Bronco 35 yard line. Four plays and 35 yards later, the Packers found themselves in the end zone, this time Jeff Thomason grabbed an 8 yard pass from Hasselbeck for the score.

Hasselbeck finished with 10-14 for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Edwin Watson led the Packer rushing attack with 33 yards on 9 carries. Bill Schroeder led all receivers with 85 yards on four receptions.

Rodney Artmore led all tacklers with 7 combined and 2 passes defensed, Bernardo Harris chipped in with 6. The Packers travel this coming Saturday to New Orleans to take on the Saints in the Superdome at 7 p.m.
