Green Bay vs. Detroit
9/19/99 - Packers Lose 15-23
 |
| Running back Dorsey Levens had a huge game against the Lions with 153 rushing yards - including this TD run - and 53 receiving yards. |
The stage was set for yet another Brett Favre miracle. Could he once
again lead the Packers 80 yards for a touchdown, this time against NFC
Central division foe Detroit Lions (2-0)? The Packers (1-1), trailing
23-15, received possession of the ball on their own 20-yard line
following a 48-yard field goal by Jason Hanson.
It looked promising as Favre completed the first pass of the drive to
Dorsey Levens for 7 yards. Then, on third down, the combination hooked
up again this time for a 22-yard gain bringing the offense to midfield.
Levens ran again for 3 more of his 153 game total. Levens also had 4
receptions for 53 yards.
But, the drive eventually stalled as the Packers turned the ball over on
downs.
Early on, the Packer defense starred, as Keith McKenzie and Vaughn
Booker each sacked Charlie Batch forcing the Lions to punt to cap their
opening possession.
This set the scene for the Packers' second possession. Ryan Longwell
nailed a 45-yard field goal to give the Packers an early 3-0 lead.
The defenses would take turns stalling the opposition's offenses until
late in the opening quarter. Detroit started moving the ball against
the Packer defense. They started their possession on their own 28-yard
line. Batch found Johnnie Morton for a quick 8-yard gain. The two
would connect again for 20 yards to give the Lions a first down inside
Packer territory.
Enter Barry Sanders' replacement, Ron Rivers. Rivers would get the call
the ensuing two plays, and he ran for 4 yards bringing up a third and
six at the Packer 45 yard line. Batch hit Morton once again, on a post
pattern, for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead.
It appeared as though the Green and Gold were on their way to answering
the Lions score with one of their own. They were moving the ball
effectively with a combination of running and passing plays. They had
moved 20 yards before Levens committed his second fumble of the season,
Bryant Westbrook recovered the miscue at the Packer 40-yard line.
The Lions wouldn't take advantage of the turnover, in fact, the Packers
would immediately create a turnover of their own as LeRoy Butler would
intercept an errant pass by Batch giving the Packers possession at their
own 15-yard line. But once again, the Packer offense stalled, and Louie
Aguiar was forced to come on and punt.
The Lions ran left with Rivers, but Vonnie Holliday snuffed out the play
for no gain. On the ensuing play, Batch found tight end David Sloan on
a short post pattern, but he out ran the secondary and found the end
zone to give the Lions a 14-3 lead.
Aguiar was forced to punt again on the ensuing series of downs. Terry
Fair ran back all but three yards of Aguiar's 39-yard punt giving the
Lions good field position. Just as it appeared as though the Lions
would find a way into the end zone once again, Batch threw for Rivers.
Linebacker, Brian Williams, stepped in front of the pass intercepting
the ball at the Packer 1-yard line.
Favre and the offense were able to capitalize on this turnover. They
opened the drive with a quick pass to Antonio Freeman, then a short run
by Levens. This brought up a third and one at their own 10-yard line.
Favre would call his own number as he ran behind center, Frank Winters,
up the middle for the first down. One play later, Favre found Freeman
for a 50-yard pass play, giving the Packers possession at the Lion
39-yard line. The drive would close with another field goal by
Longwell, this one from 24-yards out.
The teams would not score in the third quarter, but the Packers scored
early in the final stanza. Detroit long snapper Allen Aldridge snapped
over the head of punter John Jett and out of the back of the end zone
for a safety. Detroit still held the lead 14-6. But the margin was
surmountable in one possession.
The Packers' ensuing possession started at their own 48-yard line. A
steady diet of Levens, and a 29-yard pass to Bill Schroeder gave the
Packers a first and goal at the Lion 2-yard line. The Packers would
waste no time in punching it in, as Levens did the honors to give the
Packers their first lead of the game at 15-13.
Charlie Batch ran for a 1-yard touchdown run on the ensuing Lion
possession to regain the advantage for the Lions. But the two-point
conversion failed, and the lead was 20-15.
Bill Schroeder led the Packer receiving corps. with 4 catches for 87
yards. Vonnie Holliday led the defensive charge with 10 tackles. The
Packers set their sights on next week, when they host the Minnesota
Vikings at Lambeau Field, kickoff is slated for 3:15 CDT.
