Green Bay vs. Detroit
11/21/99 - Packers Win 26-17
 |
| Corey Bradford celebrates after hauling in a 2 point conversion. Bradford had a big day against the Lions with 6 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. |
Coming into the game against NFC Central leading Detroit Lions (6-4) the
Green Bay Packers (5-5) knew they had to correct some mistakes. In front of
59,869 fans in Lambeau Field, they did so, and they were rewarded for their
efforts with a 26-17 victory.
After surrendering a 2-yard touchdown run to Sedrick Irvin of the Lions, the
Packers fell behind 7-0. Jim Nelson filled in temporarily for Bernardo
Harris. Nelson gave the Packers the spark they needed as he tipped a Gus
Frerotte pass, and intercepted it. While the Green and Gold didn't score on
the ensuing possession, momentum had shifted. On the Packers next
possession the Packers utilized something that has proven effective through
most of the season, the no-huddle offense. It worked as Brett Favre
scrambled and found Dorsey Levens for one of his career high 10 catches for
99 yards, this one for 53 yards before he was tracked down at the Lions
13-yard line. The drive culminated with one of the wrinkles that head coach
Ray Rhodes worked hard to iron out during the practice week. Ryan Longwell
nailed a 23-yard field goal, after having one blocked in each of the last
three contests.
On the Packers next drive, Favre spread the ball to three different
receivers as the Packers used a blend of running and passing plays to move
from their own 16-yard line to the Lions 15. De'mond Parker chipped in with
a 18-yard run as he relieved Levens. Once again, Longwell answered the
challenge with a 33-yard field goal.
The division leaders answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Germane
Crowell.
Once again the Packers had to face another demon on the ensuing drive. The
Packers efficiently moved the ball down the field. Favre hit William
Henderson for a 8-yard pass play setting the Packers up in the Lions' red
zone. Favre threw to Antonio Freeman, the pass was incomplete, but the
referees rules that Freeman was interfered with and the Packers had a first
down at the 1-yard line. They wasted no time in punching it in the end zone
with Levens. The two-point conversion failed, so the score was 14-12.
The Lions hit a 46-yard field as the final seconds ticked off the first half
clock.
On the Packers second possession of the second half, the Packers strung
together an effective drive moving the ball from their own 7 to the Lions
17. Corey Bradford proved to be difficult for the Lions to cover, as he
drew a pass interference call on Terry Fair. Once again, the Packers were
in the red zone. Once again they wasted no time, as Favre threw to the back
corner of the end zone. Bradford somehow hauled in the pass for a go-ahead
touchdown. The Lions challenged the call, but it stood and the Packers had
a 20-17 lead after Favre once again hit Bradford for a two-point conversion.
The defense held strong forcing the Lions to punt on the ensuing possession.
John Jett punted for 50 yards to Antuan Edwards. Edwards managed to return
the kick for 17 yards. Once again, the Packers offense clicked and they
were able to move the ball against the Lions defense. The drive ended with
Longwell hitting a 45-yard field goal.
The next Lion possession was cut short when Frerotte tried to hit Crowell on
a deep route. The ball was overthrown and Fred Vinson intercepted it and
returned it for 21 yards to the Lions 48.
Favre spread the ball around to various receivers in leading the offense to
the Lions 13-yard line. Longwell once again stepped up and hit a 31-yard
field goal to give the Green and Gold a 26-17 lead.
The Packers defense held the Lions scoreless for the entire second half.
They were led by Mike McKenzie's 7 tackles and 1 pass defensed.
The Packers have an extra day to savor this victory as they travel to San
Francisco to play the 49ers on Monday Night Football. Kickoff is slated for
8 p.m.
