Green Bay vs. Chicago
12/5/99 - Packers Win 35-19
 |
| RB De'Mond Parker ran through the rain and snow for 2 TDs, enroute to defeating the Bears. |
The Green Bay Packers (7-5) took on the Chicago Bears (5-8) in a windy,
snowy renewal of the oldest rivalry in the National Football League. Led by
rookie running backs De'Mond Parker and Basil Mitchell the Packers were able
to amass 188 rushing yards.
The beginning of the game was ominous for the Green and Gold as they were
forced to punt on their opening possession. The Packer defense managed to
get the ball back to the offense as rookie cornerback Mike McKenzie
intercepted Shane Matthews pass at the Packer 32-yard line.
After trading punts, the Packers had the ball back on their own 25. Favre
looked to hit Bill Schroeder on a slant, but Barry Minter jumped in the way,
intercepted the ball and returned it the remaining 34 yards for the
touchdown.
Once again Favre was intercepted, this time by Chris Hudson, as Tyrone Davis
could not corral the pass. The Bears decided to use their rookie
quarterback, Cade McNown. Facing a fourth down and inches, Jude Waddy came
on a blitz which flushed McNown out of the pocket. He rolled to his right
and threw deep down the field. Bernardo Harris was running
stride-for-stride with running back Curtis Enis and tipped the ball away
giving the Packers possession again.
Once again the Packer offense stalled and the Bears got the ball back. A
quick screen to Curtis Conway took the Bear offense 22 yards to the Green
Bay 11-yard line. Jude Waddy's speed and perseverance prevented Conway from
scoring on the play. However, the goal line defense stood strong forcing
the Bears to settle for a 24-yard field goal, expanding the lead to 10-0.
With the wind at their backs, the Packer offense took the field. Favre took
advantage of the situation and combined with Antonio Freeman and Bill
Schroeder for 41 yards including a 6-yard touchdown strike to Schroeder to
cut the lead to 10-7. Chipping in was Basil Mitchell with 3 carries for 11
yards. Parker also had 24 yards on two carries.
The Packer defense forced the Bears to punt. Antuan Edwards returned the
boot 11 yards giving making the line of scrimmage the Bears 29.
On third down, Favre found Freeman for a 17-yard completion to keep the
drive moving. Favre attempted a pass to Corey Bradford, but it fell
incomplete, but as has been a recent trend, Bradford drew a pass
interference call on the defensive back, Terry Cousin, setting the Packers
up with a first and goal from the 1-yard line. William Henderson punched it
into the end zone giving the Packers a 14-10 lead.
On the ensuing Chicago possession, the Packers forced the Bears to punt once
again. With Keith Crawford in his face, Todd Sauerbrun dropped his toss,
Keith McKenzie recovered the fumble and returned it 45 yards for a
touchdown.
The Bears would close the half with a 23-yard field goal by Boniol.
The teams traded punts for most of the third quarter. Edwards dropped one
of the punts and the Bears recovered the miscue at the Packer 26.
Enis finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The ensuing two-point
conversion failed as Tyrone Williams defended Bobby Engram in the corner of
the end zone. The touchdown made the score 21-19.
The Packer offense once again had the wind at their backs in the fourth
quarter, but kept the ball moving with Parker's speedy runs on a muddy,
slippery field. When needed, Favre was able to find receivers for key
receptions. Facing a third and nine from the Packer 24-yard line, Favre
scrambled, hit Freeman for a gain of 11 yards. Parker had 6 carries for 40
yards on the drive which culminated on a 12-yard touchdown run by Parker.
The score was Parker's first touchdown in the National Football League.
During the drive, Favre hit Freeman for a 33-yard completion. On the play,
Favre eclipsed the 3,000 yard mark, the eighth consecutive season he has
done so. Only Dan Marino (nine times from 1984-1992) has accomplished the
feat. Favre threw for 155 yards one 17 completions in 24 attempts (71.0%)
and one touchdown.
The Bears tried to move the ball against the Packer defense, but as soon as
they started moving the ball, someone on the Packer defense stepped up and
made a big play. Vonnie Holliday sacked Matthews for a 5-yard loss on third
down forcing the Bears to punt.
Once again, Parker dazzled as he carried the ball 5 times for 44 yards
including the drive capping 21-yard touchdown scamper. The drive also
featured tight end Lamont Hall's first reception filling in for injured Jeff
Thomason. Parker finished with 19 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Parker became the first Packer rookie to rush for over 100
yards since Edgar Bennett in 1992 in a game ironically at Soldier Field in
Chicago.
The Bears, who rushed for 160 yards against the Packers earlier in the
season were limited to 91 yards and one touchdown. Jude Waddy and Darren
Sharper each notched 8 tackles to lead Green Bay's defense. Keith McKenzie
expanded his team leading sack total to 7.
The victory moves the Packers to 7-5. They return home to host the Carolina
Panthers, kickoff is slated for noon on Sunday, December 12.
