Green Bay vs. Arizona
01/02/00 - Packers Win 49-24
 |
| Dorsey Levens had a career day against the
Cardinals, rushing for 146 yards and 4 touchdowns. Levens also surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for the season for the second time in his career. |
The Green Bay Packers (8-8) hosted the Arizona Cardinals (6-10) in the 1999
regular season finale at Lambeau Field in front of 59,818 fans.
The Packers started the scoring on their second possession of the game.
After two plays to Dorsey Levens, Favre found Antonio Freeman streaking deep
across the middle for a 46-yard gain. Levens again ran for 13 of his game
high 146 yards rushing. Favre then hit Bill Schroeder for a 10-yard
touchdown strike.
The Cardinals responded with a 23-yard field goal by former Packer, Chris
Jacke.
Mike McKenzie intercepted his first of two on the day to give the Packers
possession near midfield. Mike McKenzie led the team in interceptions with
6 making him the first rookie to lead the team since Jim Bob Morris did in
1987. On a third and long situation the pocket collapsed around Favre. The
quarterback tucked the ball and ran toward the sideline. He faked a pass
which forced a Cardinal linebacker to jump allowing Favre to pick up the
needed yards for the first down. Levens would cap the drive with a
touchdown run of 8 yards.
The ensuing Cardinal possession was stopped by Billy Lyon's first career
interception as the ball ricocheted off of linebacker Jude Waddy before Lyon
cradled the ball before it hit the turf. The Packers were unable to
capitalize on the turnover. The Packers would head into the locker room
with a 14-3 lead.
The Green and Gold wasted even less time in the second half. After stopping
the Arizona offense, the Packers would hand the ball to Dorsey Levens.
Levens once again capped the drive with a touchdown run. Levens, entering
the game needed 112 yards to eclipse the 1,000 yard plateau.
The Cardinals answered with a 6-yard touchdown toss from Jake Plummer to
Frank Sanders. Basil Mitchell then weaved his way through the kickoff
coverage of the Cardinals for an 88-yard kickoff return.
The Packer defense held the Arizona offense on a fourth down attempt giving
the offense possession in Cardinal territory. After a run by Levens, Favre
found Schroeder for a 23-yard gain. The play moved Bill Schroeder over the
1,000 yard receiving mark. Schroeder combined with Antonio Freeman to
become the first pair of Packer receivers to eclipse the mark since Freeman
teamed with Robert Brooks in 1997. Levens capped the drive with the third
of his four touchdown performance.
The Cardinals would answer with a touchdown run by Mario Bates. The Packers
recovered the ensuing onside kick. However they were not able to move the
ball. The Cardinals were able to move the ball from their own 32 to the
Packer 23 yard line. Plummer tried to hit David Boston, but Mike McKenzie
picked it off again. The Packers quickly moved the ball out to their own 40
on two passes to Corey Bradford. Then the completed the 99-yard drive with
a 32-yard touchdown pass from Favre to Schroeder.
The Cardinals responded with an efficient 62-yard drive before Plummer found
Mac Cody for a touchdown.
Once again, the Packers answered quickly and effectively. Favre found
Charles Jordan for a 43-yard gain to the Cardinal 1-yard line. Levens
capped the drive with his fourth touchdown run of the game. Levens was the
fourth player to achieve four rushing touchdowns in one game. The last was
Terdell Middleton who accomplished the feat on October 15, 1978 against
Seattle in Milwaukee. Jim Taylor(three times) and Don Anderson were the
others.
Favre finished with 311 yards on 21 completions in 34 attempts and 2
touchdowns. Favre eclipsed the 4,000 yard mark for the third time in his
career. Favre's 599 attempts was four short of the record set by Don
Majkowski in 1989.
The 49 points scored in the game was the most the Packers scored since they
scored 55 in a game against Tampa Bay on October 2, 1983.
The Packers finish the regular season with a 8-8 record.
