Green Bay vs. New York Jets - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay

Regular Season - Packers Lose 20-16

HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN POSTGAME COMMENTS:

overall impressions of the game: "We lost this game because we had too many penalties, didn't convert third downs and dropped balls.

"We had too many penalties...costly ones in the red zone, costly ones on the big plays. We'll have to fix that.

"As I told them (team), in spite of this loss, I'm disappointed, but not discouraged.

"I feel for the guys. I asked them too play a tough football game -- I thought they did. I asked them to give a great effort out there -- I thought they gave us that. I feel disappointed for them because they really put everything into this ballgame to prove everybody wrong.

"I was happy to see how our defense rose to the occasion."

on Brett Favre: "I told him at the end, he's as good a two-minute man as there is in football.

"We knew tht Brett was going to be a little bit rusty, but a rusty Brett Favre is better than many people who are full speed...so I"ll take that any day."

QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE

on his performance: "I thought for the most part, I threw the ball okay. It (elbow) really never affected me on any throws, just one towards the end."

on the loss: "I missed a few throws, we dropped a few balls, had a few penalties -- that's really it.

"I'm never pleased with a loss, I'm not today. But I know I can get better, I know our team can get better. I know defensively we played great; offensively we have a ways to go."

on the final play: "Sometimes you win those in the end, sometimes you don't. When they work, they're always good calls; when they don't they, they're always bad calls. But I don't think it was a bad call.

"I was nervous, worried, but felt comfortable in that situation. You can't win them all, but I'd like to think I left everything on the field."

on the team: "The Jets are a good football team, I don't want to take anything away from them. They deserved to win, just as much as we would have, but I like the direction we're going in.

"The direction he's (Mike Sherman) going in, is the right direction. We just all have to believe in it."

LINEBACKER NATE WAYNE

on the defense's performance: "I think today we had more confidence going into this game. We played with a lot of confidence. Guys were having fun, flying around, making plays. There were a few mistakes here and there, but the Jets made plays. They did things, too. So we just have to come back, watch the film tomorrow and see where we made mistakes and just build from them."

on his personal performance: "I was just doing my job, trying to have fun and make plays. I made some mistakes, but you have to go back and look at the film."

SAFETY DARREN SHARPER

on his first quarter interception: "We had looked at that formation a lot of times during the week. I had my quarter of the field and the receiver came that way. I saw him try to sit down. I think him and Testaverde had a miscommunication, because Chrebet went one way, and he threw it another way. I just read the quarterback - read Chrebet and thought he would sit down, and I just jumped it when I saw Vinny throw it and held on to it. I wish I could have gotten into the end zone, looking back on it, to put more points on the board for us."

on the defense's effort: "I think the defense fought real hard. We have to eliminate a lot of the big plays. That's one of the things about playing defense - we played good for three quarters, four quarters and they have a couple of big plays happen. That kind of nullifies your efforts. I think on defense, as a whole, we're coming together, though."

SAFETY LEROY BUTLER

on the loss: "It was a tough one. We had our chance to put them away. We had a couple chances when we were up 13-10. We could have put them away, but we didn't. We have a team now. We just have to learn a little killer instinct."

on the defense: "Defensively, I thought we fought hard. Statistically, it may not look like it, but we fought hard. Sometimes, it's going to be where the offense puts up a lot of points, and defensively, we have to stop them, and vice versa, we just have to come out and play. I was very proud of the way we were ready to play. We came out fast with Sharper's interception that got us on the board right away. But the thing we have to do when we score, the defense has to keep them off the board. I think for the most part, if you can keep teams to 13, 14 points going into the fourth quarter you should win a lot of games.

RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN

on coming back from his injury: "Just getting warmed up was the biggest thing, and once I got warmed up, I felt really good out there. Once I got rolling, it was just clicking after that. It was a tough one out there for the first game. The Jets played hard. We played hard. Whoever had the ball last would become the winner."

on how the offense will react: "We'll just look at what we did wrong, look at our mistakes and correct them and go on to the next game. That's what we have to do. Look at what was wrong, what we did wrong, what we did to hurt ourselves in the game and go from there. We had a couple penalties where we needed a big play. Penalties hurt us, and we have to look at that and make sure we correct it for the next game."

on whether his knee was hurting after the game: "No. Not at all."

WIDE RECEIVER ANTONIO FREEMAN

on the offense's performance: "The offense struggled the first quarter. I think we had 51 yards in the first half. The defense did a good job of keeping those guys (Jets) out of the end zone. Offensively, we just didn't have any punch today."

on the offense's mistakes: "Yeah, they're definitely fixable. We'll go back tomorrow and look at the things we did wrong, try to correct those things and try to continue to work on the things we did well."

KICKER RYAN LONGWELL

on his performance: "It was one of the tougher days that I've seen since I've been here. The wind was blowing real hard, and it wasn't in pregame, so it didn't give us any chance to prepare for it. You'd like to have a win rather than a successful game. So it's kind of bittersweet."

on his accuracy: "I have the best snapper in the league. I've said it many times. I have a great holder in Hass (Matt Hasselbeck), and we just need to keep it going."
