Green Bay vs. Indianapolis - Post-game Quotes - Green Bay
Regular Season - Packers Win 26-24
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN (on the close win) "I don't know how many more of those I can take. Eleven games (played), and nine have come down to the last play of the ballgame, and obviously this was no exception.
"We had some tremendous opportunites with field position and we didn't take advantage of them. I was worried we had missed some golden opportunities.
"I think the reason for our success today was minimal turnovers, the guys holding things together and trying to not give up the big plays.
"With the injuries and where we were this week in practice with the minimal guys out there and trying to keep things together at 4-6, I guess I should say this was the most challenging week I've had."
(on the running game) "We were patient with the running game. I thought that helped us. Ahman Green is a good back and I'm not surprised by him. I expect more in the future."
(on Brett Favre's game)" One thing you can't tell Brett Favre is he can't do something. As I told him a few minutes ago, I said, 'You actually relished the fact that you had a bad foot going into this game.' It's a challenge for him and you can't tell him he can't do something."
(on the team) "As a coach, you always worry about if you have another loss, how much harder it would be to hold things together. But this group of men all week long, practiced hard and they tried to make the playes in practice."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE (on his game) "Mentally, I felt as sharp as I've felt this year and I thought I threw the ball as well as I have this year. That doesn't mean my foot didn't hurt, but I just felt like we could do just about anything we wanted.
"I knew basically what my limitations were. I could move around, but I knew I'd be extra sore after the game. But I just wasn't going to try to run for 30 yards. I thought I could move around in the pocket enought to at least get the pass off.
"I feel it's important to play if you can play. I could have sat out this game and no one would have thought twice about it. But I played, and I thought I played one of my better games this year. Yeah it hurt, but guys were counting on me. I didn't want to let them down and I didn't want to let myself down.
"This game, and I've said it a million times, it's about playing with injuries, playing with pain, being tough. It's a physical game.
"I've always felt that it's important, as a leader of a team, to try to lead in every aspect that you can. And playing with pain is sometimes a part of it."
(on the team) "I think today is proof to a lot of people that we're not going to give up, no matter what -- regardless of the situation, regardless of the record. And if the guys on this team have any pride at all, they won't."
WIDE RECEIVER BILL SCHROEDER (on the game) "We tried to attack them on the field. We definitely tried to get down-the-field throws, but we tried to work everything in this week's plan.
"We knew we had a great week of practice. We changed some things Coach Sherman wanted us to change to keep us more focused. We brought it into the game and it was just like practice."
(on the season) "We know we've let some close games slip by. We got to go out and play like we can play. We know we have a very strong team in all three phases of this game. We just want to go out and prove to this league and prove to ourselves that we're good enough to play.
"We're not giving up. There is no chance we're going to give up. We're going to keep on trying to work every week and just push all we can."
(on the play before halftime)"There were guys yelling timeout all over the place. I think the referees were waiting to see if Ahman Green would score the touchdown and not paying attention to the clock. Unfortunately it hurt us today."
RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN (on the game)"This week was a regular week, today was a regular work day. We practiced hard throughout the week and we knew just like any other week that we wanted to establish the run first, which opens up the pass. We did that soon, we did that well today, the offensive line blocked well.
"My vision is always something I've been blessed with. There's not too many running backs who have good vision and can see a cutback or can see a cut they can make. And plus my offensive line makes it a lot easier out there."
(on the weather) "I played at the University of Nebraska, so it's second nature to me. A lot of guys can't or are not used to the cold weather, but my philosophy on it is you learn to tolerate it. It's going to get cold, it's definitely going to get real cold up here. You just learn how to tolerate it and it makes it more fun."
(on the game plan) "This week the coaches and Brett (Favre) said we could put up 200 yards of rushing. I played against Indy my first two years in the league at Seattle and we ran the ball well then. I knew coming into this game if we establish it early, we can have a good running day out there on the field."
OFFENSIVE GUARD MARCO RIVERA: (on what made the difference for the team) "The difference is that we came
out as a team, and our defense shut them down in the first half. Our
offense played well in the first half, and special teams played well. It
was an all-around good performance by our team. We kept plugging away and
came out with a victory in the end."
(on the success of running the ball) "It's about time. It's what we want
every week, but everything was firing today. Our type of weather out there
today. Any time it snows and is muddy, that's when we're at our best. We
love that, and so we're going to have a great running day."
CORNERBACK TOD McBRIDE: (on his interception) "Peyton (Manning) was scrambling out, and I was
blessed to be in the right place at the right time. I made a play for the
team, and it was a fortunate situation."
(on whether he responded well to being challenged) "I would say that. I
got my first regular-season interception, so I'm excited about that. I'm
just excited about this win right now. It was a big win for the team, and
we're feeling confident right now."
RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN: (on his 100-yard rushing performance) "The special thing about it is that
it was a hard-fought win. It was a win that we needed. It was a game where
everybody pulled together - offense, defense and special teams. Rossum's
kickoff (return) gave us some breathing room. We did what we had to do to
win the game."
(on the game's closing drive) "That's when you have to step up. I'm not
much of a talker, but if I have to say something, I will. I let most of my
actions do the talking for me - the way I run, the way I practice, the way I
do things on the field when we need it. That's something we needed at that
time. We needed a good run. We got what we needed and turned it into a
victory."
DEFENSIVE END DAVID BOWENS: (on his fumble recovery) "I heard the ref say Green had it at the later
part of the play. At first, 47 (Colt's Billy Austin) had it, and I just
tried to go in there and take it. It was hard in there, but by the grace of
God I was able to hold on."
(on his experience at the bottom of the pile) "Oh, hey, when they say it's
dirty in there...There was some dirty stuff going on. I swear somebody took
off their helmet and was trying to bite my leg. My teammates did a good job
of pulling guys off the pile and trying to help me out."
NOSE TACKLE RUSSEL MARYLAND: (on the team) "Our goal is to win them all the rest of the way out. That's
a tough challenge, but we're backed into a wall right now. We got to. We
have to win them all if we're going to do anything and get into the
playoffs. So, that's one down and five to go."
(on the offense, defense and special teams) "That's a game that we needed.
The last couple of games, it's been maybe two out of three - offense and
defense, but maybe not special teams, and then special teams has been coming
on strong, but maybe the defense has faltered. I think all three phases
today really contributed to this win today."
(on his first-quarter safety) "I saw the ball come out of his hand, and I
was just trying to get back there. I knew we were in the end zone, and I
was just trying to fall on it. But he fell on it before I did, and I just
touched him down. I'll take the safety and the sack."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE SANTANA DOTSON: (on pressuring Peyton Manning) "We didn't come in knowing we were going to
get four sacks and what not, but what we wanted to do was create pressure
and chaos. Make him feel uncomfortable in the pocket and make him make the
difficult throw, and I think we did that on him."
KICK RETURNER ALLEN ROSSUM: (on his 92-yard kickoff return for a TD) "I tell you what, momentum had
kind of shifted towards their way, and we needed a big play. I'm just
thankful that I had the opportunity, and I give all the thanks to those guys
who were blocking and working so hard all week during practice. Without
that, we'd probably be in here moping right now."
(on his first touchdown in Green Bay) "It's nothing like anything you've
ever experienced. To finally get a Lambeau Leap, it feels good. I kind of
had claimed the other end zone as my house, but I'll tell you what, I'll
take the other end zone."
SPECIAL TEAMS COACH FRANK NOVAK: (on the kickoff return for a TD) "It was a crucial time in the game, and we
had put in a special return on that one that we hadn't shown before. Aside
from him (Allen Rossum) being successful, the appreciation for everyone on
that unit that had to make those blocks on that return on a far catch and
bring it all the way back to the sideline, it's very gratifying as a coach
to see that happening. Finally, when you put something together on the
blackboard, it comes across on the game and manifests itself into a great
play."
