The Packers (3-1) fell from the rank of the unbeatens in a close 14-10 loss at the hands of the Buccaneers (2-1) in Tampa.
With the heat index reaching 115 degrees on the field at Raymond James Stadium, both teams fought through exhaustion until Brett Favre's final pass fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired. a 39-yard touchdown run by Buccaneers' running back Mike alstott that proved to be the difference in the game.
Cornerback Donnie abraham intercepted Favre's first pass on the Packers' opening drive. Early in the second quarter Green Bay was poised to take the first lead of the game when Shelton Quarles intercepted a Favre pass and ran it back 98-yards for a touchdown. It was the longest interception return in Tampa Bay history.
Green Bay would eventually answer midway through the second quarter when Bill Schroeder hauled in a 67-yard touchdown reception from Favre. That would be Favre's only touchdown pass of the day going 20-35 for 258 yards and three interceptions. Tampa Bay's Brad Johnson completed 23 of 29 attempts for 184 yards.
On Tampa Bay's first drive of the third quarter, Packer defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila sacked Johnson and forced a fumble recovered by John Thierry deep in Buccaneers territory. The Packers settled for a 35-yard Ryan Longwell field goal ending their scoring for the afternoon.
Gbaja-Biamila totaled three sacks on the day to bring his league-leading total to nine after just four games. Thierry and linebacker Nate Wayne both tallied one sack each.
Coming into the game Green Bay had outscored its opponents 56-0 in the second half.
Midway through the fourth quarter alstott, filling in for the injured Warrick Dunn who was inactive, rushed through the middle of the line then broke outside for his touchdown scamper. He finished the day with 77 yards on 15 carries. Green Bay's ahman Green rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries adding seven catches for 65 yards.
The Packers offense started its final drive from the 16-yard line with 4:17 left on the game clock. Favre drove the offense 76 yards to the Tampa Bay 8-yard line before calling the final timeout with 35 seconds remaining in the game. a false start by Bubba Franks and the ensuing sack by Tampa Bay's anthony McFarland left Green Bay faced with fourth down from the 18-yard line with just eight seconds left. Favre's final pass intended for Donald Driver was batted down in the end zone by safety John Lynch to the end the game.
For the Packers, Schroeder led the receivers with four receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown. Rookie David Martin, back after missing last week's game due to injury, had two catches for 33 yards while tight end Bubba Franks had one reception for eight yards. Wide receiver Antonio Freeman's lone 6-yard catch came with just over three minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
Keyshawn Johnson paced the Buccaneers receiving core with 9 catches for 82 yards. Receiver Riedel anthony grabbed three passes for 40 yards and tight end Dave Moore gained 18 yards on his first three receptions of the season.
Much of the pregame hype focused on the rivalry between Favre and Bucs lineman Warren Sapp. While Sapp was unable to sack the quarterback, he was consistently in the pocket trying to disrupt the passing game.
Key players from both teams missed some time with minor injuries. Tampa Bay's Lynch was on the sidelines with a pulled groin when Schroeder scorched the secondary for a long touchdown reception, but the he would later return and knock down Favre's final pass attempt in the end zone. Keyshawn Johnson also collapsed as he was walking towards the sidelines, but returned after sitting out one play.
Green Bay's Gbaja-Biamila, Wayne and Mike McKenize all suffered some minor injuries but returned to the game. Vonnie Holliday missed some of the third quarter with a pulled groin, but later returned to action. He is listed as questionable for next week along with tackle Chad Clifton who left the game with a pulled hamstring. Running back Rondell Mealey was blindsided on a special teams play in the second quarter and did not return. His return next week is also questionable.
