Green Bay Packers vs. Baltimore Ravens - 10/14/01
Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on scoring 31 points on the Baltimore defense) "We had an excellent game plan. I can't say enough about Tom Rossley. I thought he called a great game and did a fantastic job as did Ed Donatell. We set our sights high all the time so we never put a quota on how many points we're going to score. We were fortunate enough against a good defense to be effective in the red zone four out of five times and get the points we needed to get."
(on the statement made by the Packers in this game) "We're not making any political statement with this win or anything else. Hopefully this is one more step to where we want to be at the end of the season. We beat a very good football team, the defending world champs, and that's it - now we have to get ready for Minnesota."
(on his game plan) "Other people had spread them out and I think a lot of the reason why it worked was Number 4 was our quarterback to be totally honest with you. We had an excellent game plan. We were in a lot of shotgun and a lot of new type of runs out of the shotgun that we haven't employed very much lately and it put him (Favre) in a very comfortable position to see the field at different times. We probably used more shotgun than we have in the past. Putting our four receivers out there and going empty sometimes - that helped us but I don't believe that won the game for us. What won the game for us today was our players playing together as a team in every phase."
(on antonio Freeman's game) "His number was up today. We didn't force the ball to him. He had some opportunities, but we didn't do anything different than we normally do in regard to who is getting the football. We were able to hit him when he was open and he did something with it all the way up until the second-to-last play of the game. He recovered that onside kick and I can't say enough about that."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on his play against Baltimore) "We passed the ball and scored more points than anyone anticipated. They have a great defense. It may be the best defense to ever play, who am I to say otherwise? I think it says we are a good football team and it shows what we're capable of doing. I don't want to discount what we have done and I'm not going to take anything away from Baltimore's defense because they have a great defense. It was just our day. Statistically it was great game on my part but I didn't anticipate that going in."
(on the big plays by receivers) "I made some good plays, but I think when you look at those catches we had downfield - that's the difference. You can dink and dunk all day, but when you can throw the ball down the field you have to make plays and those guys made some phenomenal catches downfield."
(on his offensive coordinator) "Tom Rossley had a great game plan. I told him after the game 'I have to give credit where credit is due.' He told me Tuesday when I came in to watch film, 'We're going to get 400 yards on this team. I'm going to tell you that no one has got over 150 on them in the last two years.' So I kind of said 'Yeah you're right Tom.' I'm walking out of there going, 'This guy is crazy he must be drinking.' I think we were 8 yards from 400."
WIDE RECEIVER ANTONIO FREEMAN:
(on the game today) "We just went out and we played good football today. It was bigger than just me out there. Donald Driver and Corey Bradford made huge catches. Our backs made some catches out of the backfield and we performed well offensively."
(on the turnovers caused by the defense) "We have grown to the point where we expect our defense to get turnovers for us. If they don't, we feel there's something wrong and that's the mentality that they have. You see it all week in practice and you see it on Sundays. They really feel as they are the best defense in the National Football League. When the offense is looking at the defense we expect turnovers from that unit and they delivered again today."
(on the team confidence after win) "We needed this game a lot, especially after losing last week a game we felt we should have won. To come back and win convincingly over the defending Super Bowl Champs and one of the greatest defenses of all time does a lot for us. Hopefully we can carry this same momentum into Minnesota next week and win a tough game there."
FREE SAFETY DARREN SHARPER:
(on his interception) "We were in a coverage in which I'm basically free, we got man on everyone else. I just read the quarterback's eyes. There was great pressure up front to force him to throw back across his body. I was hoping he was going to throw it because I was hiding behind the receiver and he threw it and I was able to hold onto it."
(on being 2-0 in games against brother Jamie) "It feels great because in college he was 2-0 against me. I had to repay the favor."
(on the statement made by the defense today) "We made a great statement. You take out that last drive when we were just playing vanilla, we out-played their defense, that's what we wanted to come in the game and do."
WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on his diving catch over the middle) "I had a post route and Brett (Favre) just made a great throw and I saw the ball coming real low so I had to make a great diving catch to make the play."
RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN:
(on running against the Baltimore defense) "It was hard - it was just like running against Tampa Bay's defense. They're quick, they're smart, they don't get beat on a lot of things and their interior defensive linemen do a lot of stunting."
(on 19-yard run on 3rd down) "It was one of the plays we've been running all year. It was a counter play where you have to read it slow. I read it slow, I was patient, the blocks were made and we stuck it up-field. We knew that coming in it was going to be hard running the ball. We just stuck with it."
CORNERBACK MIKE MCKENZIE:
(on his interception) "It was one of those situations where we were locked up and I was pressing him toward the sidelines and got my head around in time to see the ball coming down."
(on the play of the defensive unit) "We got kind of vanilla toward the end just to secure the win. I think in the midst of the battle early on we were definitely tough out there."
TIGHT END BUBBA FRANKS:
(on his first two touchdown game) "It feels great, but I'm just happy we won. That's the most important thing."
