Green Bay Packers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 11/04/01
Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on the play of his quarterback) "You have to remember we played Baltimore
here and he had a near flawless game. I tell Brett just about every week
that he's not the only guy on scholarship on this team and that he doesn't
have to do it all by himself and such was the case today. He made some
tremendous throws today. When you're the quarterback, a lot of the
criticism comes to you, sometimes rightly so, sometimes wrongly, and when we
throw interceptions you've got to look at the tape and see if guys were
doing the right things at the right time."
(on the game) "We moved the ball. I thought we had an excellent game plan
on both sides of the ball. We were fairly aggressive and I'm very excited
about the fact we were able to do what we were able to do on the positive
plays. I feel if we were to eliminate the turnover margin to zero it
wouldn't have been quite this close. I give them all the credit because
they hung in there with us and they took tremendous advantage of our
turnovers. They scored seventeen points off of turnovers so all the credit
goes to them, they played a very close game and did a fantastic job that
way."
(on special teams play) "I've been waiting for a big play. Obviously
without Rossum - and that's the job he was hired to do as we all know - even
in this game I'm just waiting and waiting for it to happen on kickoff and
punt return and it just wasn't happening. There was a time there I thought
he fair caught a couple he shouldn't have, but we'll have to look at the
tape there. I certainly have no complaint on that last one."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on the Tampa defense) "I've come to the realization that every time we
play these guys it's one of those games. I have a tremendous amount of
respect, not only for their team, but for their defense and always will as
long as those guys are there lining up against us. They play hard and they
create problems for opposing offenses."
(on ahman Green relieving pressure with his big games) "It's definitely not
hurting. He's definitely a threat any time he touches the ball and today
was no exception. There may be times when he gets stuffed, but he - as well
as allen Rossum and other guys - was a difference maker today."
KICK RETURNER ALLEN ROSSUM:
(on the return) "It was just a normal punt. The guy was kicking it kind of
short all day today, but I didn't have a chance to return one. Everyone
dreams of scoring the game winning touchdowns, but I just wanted to give
Brett another chance. It kind of happened that those guys did another
tremendous job of keeping those guys out of my face."
(on whether he changed anything after slipping on an earlier punt) "No. I
haven't returned a punt since the first game on grass. I may have been a
little rusty today, but I felt that energy of the crowd, the offense,
defense and the other guys."
DEFENSIVE END KABEER GBAJA-BIAMILA:
(on being the first Packer to have double-digit sack total since Reggie
White in '98) "It feels good. as long as it helps the team and things like
that. I just thank the good Lord for putting me around these people. I'm
only as good as the people around me and that's why I'm able to do those
things."
(on how they defended after his sack) "They started chip blocking me a lot
so I started do a lot of power moves. after we knew they really had to pass
the ball they couldn't really chip or double team anymore I was really able
to use my speed toward the end."
LINEBACKER NATE WAYNE:
(on having 1PI sacks and a forced fumble) "I was into the game emotionally
and physically - flying around having fun. I feel like I made some plays
and kept my mistakes to a minimum."
(on defensive play as a unit) "I think we played well. We made some
mistakes here and there, but as a total unit I think we did a great job."
(on not forcing turnovers) "We weren't worried so much about what they were
doing. We just wanted to focus on ourselves, keep our mistakes to a
minimum, execute the defense and good things will happen. as long as we
keep it close, hang in there, limit their game, then good things will
happen."
RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN:
(on the 63-yard touchdown run) "It was a basic downhill play for us - one
of our bread and butter plays. It's a play we usually use on first downs or
third-and-shorts, but with what I call 'perfect blocking' happening, all I
had to do was to out-run the safeties to the end zone."
(on whether the TD shifted momentum in the game) "Definitely. That was one
of the momentum shifters and the punt return sealed it for us. Everybody
felt the wave going our way. Then after the punt return the defense just had
to hold on which they did and they did a great job."
(on the team effort) "Total team effort offensively, defensively and
special teams. The offense, we stumbled at the beginning, but everybody at
the end turned it on and did what they were supposed to do."
DEFENSIVE END VONNIE HOLLIDAY:
(on how the defense played) "I felt like we played when it counted and we
stepped up and made some big plays. We knew it was going to be a tough
game. Tampa came here today and they took advantage of their opportunities
when we gave it to them, but defensively we came out and at critical times
in the game we shut them down and stopped them and got the ball back for our
offense."
(on playing after being injured last game) "Today I felt the best I've felt
since the injury. I'm on the up side of the injury and happy to be back.
The bye came at a great time for us. I think a lot of guys got a chance to
heal, come back and contribute in a big way for us today."
(on the victory) "This is a huge win for us, regardless of who came in here
today, especially since it's Tampa. Last time we went down to Tampa Bay and
we felt like we should have won. We had an opportunity to win and didn't
capitalize. They came here and fought and we won. It's just a really big
game for us."
