Packers Players Of The Game
Up against the most dangerous return man in the NFL, the Packers punt coverage unit effectively contained Santana Moss. Averaging 17.5 yards per return going into the game, Moss did break free for one 20-yard return, but his other two efforts netted only 8 yards. Punter Josh Bidwell -- who had a 42.2 average on six punts -- successfully placed one punt out of bounds and forced Moss to fair catch two others.
Jets Player Of The Game
Jets quarterback Chad Pennington finished off a breakout regular season with an outstanding performance. In the words of Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, Pennington was "flawless," completing 17 of 24 passes for 196 yards and four touchdowns. His passer rating for the game was 134.7.
Stat Of The Game
While the Packers converted on only 29 percent of their third down opportunities (4 of 14), the Jets were successful 67 percent of the time (8 of 12).
Play Of The Game
After falling behind early, the Packers were down but not out late in the third quarter. Trailing 28-10, the Packers were facing third-and-7 at the 20-yard-line when Brett Favre's pass went over the outstretched arms of Javon Walker resulting in a Sam Garnes interception. Garnes returned the pick 65 yards, setting up New York's third straight touchdown drive to put the Jets safely ahead.
THEY SAID IT
GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman --
On difference in game: "The New York Jets were the difference. They came out, they made the plays, they did what they had to do to win. We didn't, and that's the name of that."
On loss: "We got outplayed by a good football team today. We played 16 games this year, we won 12 of them. Unfortunately we lost our last one, which stings more than if it was the first one. We lost to a good football team today. We have to play better next time out."
On game: "The one bright spot in the game: Our biggest fear was containing their return people and I thought for the most part we were able to do that. But certainly on offense and defense we didn't hold up our side of the bargain."
On coming out of halftime: "I really had confidence that if we could stop them on that first possession and we get the ball back, we could do something. But that didn't happen. They proceeded to move down the field in about four or five plays, scored a touchdown and we never got it going."
On Chad Pennington's performance: "I thought it was flawless ... You can't play much better than he played today."
On team: "As disappointed as I am about a missed opportunity. I'm very proud of our football team and how they've handled themselves this year. They're very disappointed in their performance today, but to win 12 games in this type of season, I think they've accomplished a lot ... It's not time to jump ship on them, I promise you that."
Matt Bowen --
On Jets: "They're a good football team, let's not kid around. It's not like we're playing a high school team, we're playing the New York Jets. They're good. We didn't play well. They did."
On first-round bye: "If that happens, it happens. If it doesn't, we've got to go play."
On missing Darren Sharper: "He's a Pro Bowl player, but I'm not sure one guy would have stopped them today. It's a team effort. We play as a team. We win as a team, we lose as a team and we lost as a team today."
Na'il Diggs --
On Jets: "Their backs were against the wall, we knew they were going to come out swinging. We knew from the get-go that they were going to come out like that. And we took all the punches and didn't swing back today. The scoreboard showed that."
On opening drive of second half: "We knew it was a big drive for us. They made a couple of plays, got a penalty and the next thing you know they're in the red zone. It was just missed tackles. Missed tackles alone let them walk in for the touchdown."
Brett Favre --
On Jets: "They played well. You've got to give them credit, but I'm reluctant to say that was one of our even average games. We just didn't play very well."
On failing to secure home-field advantage: "The chips were falling in line for us and it was there for the taking. It was not to be. It's upsetting. What can you do?"
On team: "Sometimes teams can win just because of who they are. We're not one of those teams ... We didn't get anything given to us this year. Maybe the adversity caught up with us today, I don't know. I think we're a better football team than we played today."
On leaving game: "I hated to come out, but (Coach Sherman) said, 'Instead of getting guys hurt, let's go another route.'"
Vonnie Holliday --
On Jets: "They were hitting on all cylinders. It didn't matter what play they ran, what defense we were in, what offensive play we called, it just was not our day today."
On if Jets wanted it more: "I can't say that. I know every guy in here wanted this win and new the opportunity we had before us. Coming into this game, everybody was confident, guys wanted this game. We can't say they wanted it more. We came into this game prepared, fired up and wanting a victory. Unfortunately it didn't happen. I don't think we've had a game like this all year. And today, everything that could go wrong, did."
Marco Rivera --
On loss: "If you play long enough, these games happen ... Every team experiences that, if it's the first game of the season, middle of the season or last game of the season. Every team, every year goes through a game like today. It was just not our day."
On playoff implications: "All I knew was if we won we put ourselves in the best position possible, and that didn't happen today."
Mike Wahle --
On impact of loss: "You would hope that we have enough confidence in ourselves that one loss doesn't sway us too much. You're never too high when you win, you're never too low when you lose."
On Jets: "They outplayed us today. In the third quarter they came out and scored and we didn't do a damn thing on offense and they came out and scored again. That's the position we're usually in doing the work out there. It was frustrating to be on the other side of that coin."
On game: "Sometimes it's just not your day."
On playoffs: "It's playoff time now. You don't want to go out of the regular season on a bad note like we just did, but it is playoff time. It's a new season and new opportunities."
