Packers Player Of The Game
Monday night in Canton, Ohio, it seemed the only thing that could stop Marcus Wilkins was the lightning that stopped the game. En route to a game-high 7 tackles, Wilkins made 3 sacks. All of the sacks came with Kansas City trying to convert on third down. Also not to be ignored was the performance of Al Harris, who in limited action made a trio of big plays: first dropping Chiefs quarterback Trent Green with a hard hit at the end of a 4-yard run, then breaking up a would-be touchdown pass two plays later, before breaking up a sideline pass in the following possession.
Chiefs Player Of The Game
Accounting for 6 of the game's 9 points, Morten Anderson continues to be one of the game's most dependable kickers. Anderson connected on 32- and 51-yard field goals in the first half. He had another 51-yard attempt that just missed, bouncing off the right upright.
Stat Of The Game
No one expects perfection in the preseason, so the Packers' seven penalties in less than three full quarters of play won't set off any alarms.
Play Of The Game
Jamal Reynolds' forced-fumble, Kenny Peterson's recovery, Marcus Wilkins' sacks, Tony Fisher's 28-yard sideline scamper, Brett Favre's 24-yard strike to Javon Walker … fine plays, all of them. A month from now, however, you probably won't remember them. On the other hand, what you'll never forget was the lightning storm that blew in, drenched the field and forced the game to be cancelled with 5:49 left in the third quarter.
THEY SAID IT
GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman -
On game's cancellation: "It was a dangerous situation on the field, not just with the lightning, but with the depth of the water it would have been a very slick surface. I think the NFL made a good decision canceling the game, because it would have been very dangerous out there."
On game: "There were some good things that I was excited about. It looks like we can still rush the quarterback a little bit. Wilkins stepped up and did a couple nice things. Jamal Reynolds had a nice pass rush. Nick Barnett played well throughout the game. Our corners covered the deep ball very well. So I'm very excited by that and the fact that we kept them from scoring touchdowns."
On Craig Nall and Akili Smith: "(Nall) was put in a tough situation ... Starting with two picks wasn't good, but he came back ... I would have liked him to take us down the field and score. He didn't, but we'll see how he does next week. The unfortunate part is we really wanted to get Akili (Smith) in the game and the rain didn't allow us. The cancellation didn't allow us to do that."
Marques Anderson -
On leaving the field in a hurry after lightning began: "We were bookin'. I don't know what our facemasks are made out of, but no one wants to be struck by lightning."
Nick Barnett -
On learning in preseason games vs. practice: "In training camp, you can't really go this speed. You can go live, but it's not a game situation. You can try to put yourself in those situations, but it's not a game. You learn a lot (playing in games)."
Mike Wahle -
On Packers' performance: "The preseason, you know you're not going to be as prepared as you want to be. You just have to go out and execute. We certainly have some things to work on before the Atlanta game."
On cancellation: "You'd like some of the young guys to get in the game and show what they can do, so that's unfortunate. But luckily we have four more of these things this preseason, so you're looking at plenty of opportunities."
Marcus Wilkins -
On three-sack performance: "This is pretty exciting. I surely never had three sacks (in a game before). It was exciting to have some success. You know, it's early in the season, so I hope I continue to work on it and make it better for the regular season."
On if he was disappointed game was cancelled: "It would have been nice to get a couple more snaps, maybe get another sack or two, but that's just the way it goes."
