PACKERS-BILLS POST-GAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN
(On Special Teams play) "A 69-yard kickoff return and a 39-yard yard punt return put them in very good field position. After a great week last week I thought we were making some progress here. I will say that Buffalo does have an excellent special teams unit. They were one of the top in the NFL last year. I'm glad it happened to us now because it certainly lets us know where we stand."
(On Brett Favre's play) "Our intention going into this game was that if he had a good series we were going to take him out, but if he had a three and out, we were going to give him another three and out. I thought he played pretty well when he was in there and certainly did a good job against what I consider a very, very good Buffalo defense."
(On Aaron Rodgers) "He obviously had a tough night. I'm sure he missed some throws that he could have made. Maybe Aaron is tired, we'll have to look at that, but he has had some good practices. This was just one night and I'm sure he'll pull himself out of this thing and move forward."
(On Buffalo's play) "I thought Buffalo played with more of an edge than us the last time we played. They played very well tonight. They played a lot better than we did collectively. Their second and third stringers played, and their first stringers did a nice job."
QB AARON RODGERS
(On how tough he will be on himself for tonight's game) "Extremely tough, I'm frustrated. I want to get better each time I take the field. Practice or a game, I didn't get better tonight."
(On the fact that it was "just a pre-season game") "I don't think there is "just a preseason game" in my book. This is my regular season, I'm not going to play in the regular season, so this is my chance to shine and I'm battling in a tough battle for number two and tonight I didn't make any strides in that department so it's frustrating. I'm going to get better but I'm never going to lose my confidence or waver confidence-wise. Obviously, it's frustrating to struggle."
RB AHMAN GREEN
(On his play tonight) "We did good and I got in a groove. I got a chance to get some good carries in there overall as a unit we ran real well. When the twos and threes got in there we kind of took a step back you know because the guys played good last week and came back and won the game for us. It just looked like the focus was off a little bit with a lot of penalties and some missed blitzes it just looked like the focus wasn't quite there for the second and third units."
(On running game overall) "Yeah it's week two of preseason and we got a long way to go, so if we're hitting the holes as we are now and blocks get picked up the way they are now and this is only week two of preseason, I'm happy. Because that means those guys, they are learning the system and all I can do is run off of them. Once they get rolling, I'm rolling right behind them."
(On touchdown pass from Brett Favre and if it was new Brett) "No, no, that's vintage Brett. That's what I expect, you know it wasn't a designed play and when you have been with a guy long enough you kind of know how he chooses to think and I knew. I saw a play-side blitz coming and I knew he would have to scramble and I know he's going to look backside. And I got open backside and he had the ball there waiting for me."
DE KABEER GBAJA-BIAMILA
(On defense taking the next step tonight...) "I thought we did well overall and we still got a lot to work with. And with the people that we have down, I thought we did pretty well. We held them down to an average of three yards per carry and even in the situations we were put in some bad situations defensively, but our attitude was we were going to try to stop them and did the best we could. But we just have to watch the tape, it's kind of hard to see but we felt we did pretty well. It wasn't like they were getting a lot, the only thing that really got us was the quarterback scramble when we were putting pressure on him and he couldn't find someone to throw it to."
(On number of injuries and whether he is okay with the performance....) "It's not where we want to be by far. Ultimately we are going to try and get this all working together like a machine and working in the right direction, but for now without seeing the tape, I thought we did okay."
C MIKE FLANAGAN
(On Packers offensive lack of production) "It's not a one-play or a one-series game. Obviously, you know we start pulling guys out, it's not your number one...but still guys got another assignment, they have to do what they are supposed to do. They started to put together one drive, started to move the ball around a little bit but something kept shooting itself in the foot. Obviously special teams were far from what they were last week...put our defense in some tough positions, especially starting on the 29-yard line, guys got to do what they got to do. Some of them are going to find out real quick this isn't college and you are going to get fired if you play like that."
(On the first drive) "That's what we expect. You can say we had our butts handed to us when we scrimmaged. Maybe we had something to prove. Whatever it was maybe we just realized that and turned it up a notch, cause now we're getting closer. Whatever it was, we came out, we executed, guys did what they were supposed to do. We marched onto the field, converted a couple third downs. That's what we are going to do as an offense. We just need to do that consistently."
(On penalties) "Later on in the game that hurts. A fumble, then we got a penalty and we had to give it back. A safety, special teams penalties, that's what Coach Sherman was just talking about in here...he said penalties and special teams were killing us."
S NICK COLLINS
(On the Bills offense) "We were out there seeing what we can do...we had a couple breakdowns. They played great, but we know we got to get better, come back next week and put it together on the field."
(On their first-team offense scoring all three times they had the ball) "We were put into situations that we had chances to make plays, and we didn't. But we are just going to work hard and come back next week and do it right."
(On spraining his ankle) "I'm fine; it was just one little freak accident out on the field that happened. But I'm alright. It was a little nervous...but we're just going to fight through it. That's what we do. We don't like to be hurt, so we just fight through it and go out there and do what we have to do."
**
BUFFALO BILLS HEAD COACH MIKE MULARKEY
(On special teams and defense helping out the offense again this year) "I'll stick up for the offense this time too because they did something with it. I'd like to see what our time of possession was since I haven't got the stats yet. The time of possession and third down I know improved and that's what we're looking for from last week. That was the biggest key. Could we get better in all three phases this week than we were last week and we did."
(On the 15 play, 65-yard drive) "I was proud of that. I wish we could've got seven out of that but we overcame a holding call, which was key. We did not overcome them last week. We put ourselves in a couple of positions that we had to overcome. It was good that we were capable of doing it but again, field position played a big part of it and hopefully that continues."
(On JP and what he thinks it was like for him and the fans to run in the touchdown) "It goes to show you that he has some talent there running the ball. I don't want him to make a habit of it but with a first year quarterback, the thought process speeds up and typically the first instinct is to run. Hopefully you have the legs to do it and he did. The whole emphasis, especially on that third down when we talked about it, was to 'take what they give you...take what they give you' and that pertains to running as well. I'd still like to see him get down because on the two-minute drill, he could've got out of bounds and taken a hit off. That's something that will go until he figures it out or takes a good hit but hopefully he's going to pay attention to that before it happens."
(On Lionel Gates being productive even when he runs outside after being told to wait a few seconds for a hole to open up inside) "I think my coaching and life career would last longer if he would. Some of those are up inside and can be big but he's made plays. Defenses will play a specific type runner and probably make him play more honest. Even the touchdown he did break it up inside and that was good to see. He's a strong runner."
(On the safety when the penalty was called and on JP's decision-making on when to throw or run) "I told him there's a time clock. That clock is when you're going through your progression. Then there's a scramble time clock and at that time, it has to go off. I've told the offense that plays are going to last longer and I didn't realize they lasted as long as they did tonight. Our offensive line was sucking air like I've never seen before but that's something that JP has to get used to. He only has so much time. There's too much speed and it's coming. The offensive-line can only hold out for so long...throw that thing away. Give it as a souvenir to someone in the stands."
BUFFALO BILLS WR ERIC MOULDS
(On playing in front of a preseason sellout) "It's great to get the opportunity to play in front of a lot of fans. We got a chance to play in Indy last week when they had a sellout, and we played in Green Bay for the scrimmage game and they had a sellout, so hopefully we'll get a lot of games like that in the upcoming weeks where we can play in front of a sellout. Our fans are always great, and to get the opportunity to go out and play in front of them and get a win for them, even though it's the preseason, to get a win for them brings a lot more joy than losing."
(On what the team is looking to accomplish with the remaining two preseason games) "Well, just to see where we are as far as our mental state, and seeing the mistakes that we've made. For me, it's conditioning. I see how many plays I got, and how tired I got, or if I got tired at all. It (the film) tells me if I have to step my conditioning up, but a lot of the other guys, it's just trying to correct the mistakes they made."
BUFFALO BILLS RB WILLIS MCGAHEE
(On his touchdown run) "I didn't get in on the first try, and I kind of took it personal. But on the touchdown run, Daimon Shelton had a good block, and the O-line blocked really good. But the goal line situation, it was all up to me to get into the end zone."
**
End of game.
**

**

**

PACKERS HALFTIME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on the play of the special teams) "It was terrible. We put our defense in a very difficult situation. We gave (Buffalo) the ball in the red zone twice - we can't do that...never again."
(on the play of the defense) "Well, I thought they did a good job in coverage. The quarterback had to run around. We didn't tackle him very well, but I thought our coverage held up fairly decent. But our special teams has killed us."
(on whether he was he pleased with the first-team offense scoring a touchdown) "Well, not after what just happened, because if you don't play well on special teams, you don't win."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on the effectiveness of the Packers' running game) "It was better than last week, so it's good to show some improvement. It helped us out in some situations on the scoring drive. We drove down the field and scored, so I'm pleased with that, but we still have a long way to go."
(on whether his offseason workouts paid off on the TD pass to Ahman Green) "Well, I've made that play before. (But) the workouts didn't hurt my ability to make it. The defense had it played well, that's for sure."
