PACKERS-TITANS POST-GAME QUOTES
COACH MIKE SHERMAN
(Opening statement) We did pretty good. We had a couple of guys cramping up during the game, which obviously hampered us. Particularly that fourth quarter, Ben Steele was cramping up. (Roy) Manning was cramping up. (Brett) Favre got leg whipped on a play. He came out of the game and seemed like he was okay. He said he wanted to go back in and the doctor said it was going to be fine. He still will be fine. We think it is a basketball-turn-your-ankle type thing. We think he will be fine by Wednesday of next week. I think we faired pretty well.
(on Al Harris being ready for the season opener) All indications, he will be ready to play.
(on Brett Favre being able to play in the season opener) Oh yeah.
(on overall thoughts on the preseason play) We did some ugly things tonight. We won the game obviously. Preseason is about getting better. I think we did get better at some things. I was pleased with the first offense and in the third possessions. We were able to drive, against what I would consider a good defense, and we ended up scoring. But the first two possessions, we had opportunities, but protection certainly did not help us at all. Tennessee is a very well-coached football team. I knew that coming down here. Every time you come play a Jeff Fisher team, it's a tough battle.
I was pleased with our first defense. Other than the one drive they gave up, we didn't give up the big play necessarily. I know Chris Johnson gave up a play. Other than that, I think the first defense did okay. We have a long way to go. As I said at the beginning of the season, we are going to be a work in progress and it doesn't stop at the end of the preseason. It's going to have to continue. Next week in practice, as we focus on the players that are going to be playing, hopefully we will make some improvement. The penalty situation is inexcusable. It comes back to me as I told the players, but I put it on them right now that we get that cleaned up. That will not work this season to have that many penalties, and the stupid penalties that we had tonight. Playing stupid like that doesn't bode well. So if we don't get smarter, its going to be tough. I'm hopeful that they will.
(on the decision of the offensive line) I want to look at the tape in regard to that so I can make a good decision. I had a couple of holds by all those guards, which kind of upsets me a lot. We have to take a look at the tape and make a good evaluation of that.
QB AARON RODGERS
(On finally making plays this preseason) It's a long time coming. It was frustrating as all get out not being able to put points on the board the first three preseason games and in the first half, we put ourselves in third-and-25 a couple of times.
I take my hat off not only to the play-calling on that drive, but also the offensive line. We had second-team guys in there working their butts off trying to make this team - as am I, trying to compete for that second-string spot - and we marched down on their first-team defense and ended up scoring on them. It's a great feeling - a long time coming.
(On getting the surprise call to action when Favre left in the first half) I heard (the coaches) yelling my name, and I was watching where the ball was, but I saw Brett limping so I ran out there. I thought he was going to wave me off, and a couple of plays later he came and got me.
We had a good play called on that third down. I was able to convert it, Brett came back in and we finished the drive off with a touchdown. It was key to get off to a good start and I was fortunate to be able to make a play in that situation.
DT MARK TAUSCHER
(On if the offense is coming together) I think we have some things to clean up - we've done some good things and we've had some lapses. I think the first thing is penalties. That's probably been the biggest pitfall as to why we've had struggles. We've been a pretty good offense, but there's been too many series that we haven't had that and it's caused some problems.
(On if the run game is still the priority) Like I said, I think penalties are the first and most important thing that we have to clean up. We could run the ball all day but if we get called for holdings and false starts, the running game is going to be irrelevant.
Obviously we need to run the ball better, but the main thing is to keep ourselves in manageable second and third downs and get a chance to keep moving the chains, because when we get into our rhythm, we're good.
WR JAVON WALKER
(On playing with the uncertainty around his grandparents' situation in Mississippi) That's something that I think they tried to keep away from me for a little bit because they didn't want me to bother with it until finally they asked me if I could do something and Coach Sherman let me get the word out there just in case anybody could find out anything. But they ended up ok.
(On going down on one knee after scoring the touchdown) It was just being thankful. We're out here playing a game that's fun, we're going to go back to a home where everything is working for us, and there's a lot of our friends and family that don't have that, and we're just praying for them.
(On if he'll go down to Mississippi) I can't get down there - they're trying to get people out more than letting more people in. They'll call me and let me know how everything is going and we'll see how everything takes its course in the next few days.
LB COREY JENKINS
(on his interception) It was the first pick of my NFL career. I maybe should have kept the ball. Now I have to go home and talk to my fiancée. She is going to be mad at me that I didn't bring it back.
(on the team accepting him) I am still just the new guy. They were saying good job new guy, way to go new guy. That's fine though. They seem like a great group of guys. They welcomed me with open arms. They told me to just go out and play, and that is what I did. It was fun even though I didn't get off the plane until 11. It was fun, but it was tiring.
(on making the roster) I can't control that. None of these guys in here can control that. The only thing you can control is what you do on the field. The rest is in the hands of the man upstairs. All you can do is go out play hard and play physical. There are 31 other teams watching so if you are not here, but play hard maybe you can end up with someone else.
(on his path to the NFL) It has been a long road for me to get here from double-A baseball, to junior college, to college, from quarterback to linebacker in the NFL. Quincy Carter and I were roommates and I saw him on television playing quarterback at Georgia so I thought I will give it a shot since I wasn't having fun playing baseball anymore.
DT CLETIDUS HUNT
(on the game) The run defense is always a concern. As long as we keep that shut down the rest will fall into place. I felt we played well together. We played more as a unit. Everyone got the feel of each other and had fun.
TENNESSEE TITANS QUOTES
COACH JEFF FISHER
(Opening statement) We really don't have any injuries to report in this game, which is a very, very good thing. We had some minor things. Chris Brown bruised his elbow but we were going to take him out anyway after six carries.
From a game standpoint, it is never good when you lose. The reasons are obvious - the penalties and the turnovers. When you turn the ball over like we did, you just can't win the game.
But there were some real good things to build on this week. I think the negative things can be corrected. We started the game the way I wanted to start the game - with emotion and intensity. You can't just turn it on once the regular season starts. The defense, pass rush, turnovers, and especially how Antwan Odom rushed the passer was good to see. Tony Beckham coming in at corner and making plays was very good to see.
We have a couple of difficult days ahead of us as we have to trim our roster down. We have some tough decisions, but as a staff we have a pretty good idea of which direction we're going.
This was a tough week for us and everybody around the league as far as what is taking place south of here. It hit home with some of our players. It was a short week after long travel last week. I was proud of the guys for their ability to put those things aside momentarily and play hard.
We're as ready as we can be for the regular season. We have a long, hard work week ahead of us.
(on how Steve McNair has handled the events of the past week) If you know Steve, he is a very private person. He doesn't share very much about it, but it has been heavy on his heart this week as it was with Brett (Favre) and really everybody. Steve is close to the situation where his family is. One can only imagine what is going on down there.
QB STEVE MCNAIR
(On defense making it easy early) It's always good when you start the game on the plus 20 plus 30-yard line. It gave us an opportunity to get quick points and that's what we did in the first half. The defense played well, they gave us the ball in the first half and we took advantage of it and got 10 points out of it. Hopefully in the future we can score touchdowns and not field goals.
(On how close offense is to being ready for regular season) I think we are very close. I think next week when we narrow everything down and put it into packages and knowing exactly what to look for. This offense is going to be very good. I'm not saying we are 100% where we want to be but we are very close. I think we did some good things tonight. Guys made some plays. We overcame some penalties in the first two or three drives and I think that is a good sign of unity and coming together. I think we will continue to improve week in and week out.
(On if he thinks Tyrone Calico is 100%) I think so. When you have an injury like Tyrone had it takes some time to not only physically, but mentally to get back into the groove and I think that was Ty's problem a couple weeks ago. It's just letting everything go mentally and going out there and relaxing and playing the game. I think tonight he showed a promise at the wide-out position. He is a big physical guy and that's what we need him for and tonight he made some key plays on third down and he made some catches that normally Ty would hopefully he is back and comfortable with it. We have some young guys that are stepping up too so with the receiving core that we have now I'm pretty satisfied with what we've got.
(On how hard it has been to focus this week due to circumstances in hometown) It was very hard to stay focused. I think playing this game was a sign of relief. Just getting your mind off of it for a bit and being amongst your teammates, the coaching staff and just separating yourself from it for a minute but in reality it's still there. This thing is a lot bigger then life itself. There are a lot of people in the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that's unfortunate to be in the situation that they are right now. It's unfortunate and it's a sad thing but, it's nature and we have to deal with it.
(On if he is going to Mississippi) Actually, I'm going down there tomorrow morning to visit my family and just make sure everything's ok. You get a lot of mixed emotion. The sad thing about it is that you get so frustrated because there is not communication. They can't communicate with you and you can't communicate with them and when you do communicate one is saying it's ok and the other is saying it's traumatizing. So I just wanna go and check on them myself. It will make me feel a lot better. At the same time there are a lot of other people and families that are in worse shape then me. Fortunately, I didn't lose anybody but there are a lot of other families that have lost fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, grandparents, etc. at this time it's a very sad situation. I think with the help of everybody here in Tennessee and all over the world hopefully those people can get back on their feet and move on.
