- Today's paid attendance for the game was 70,400.
- Brett Favre became the third quarterback in NFL history with 50,000 career passing yards, joining Dan Marino (61,361) and John Elway (51,475). Favre entered the game with 49,935 and now has 50,277.
- Favre's three touchdown passes broke John Elway's single-stadium NFL record (180). Elway threw 180 at Mile High Stadium. Favre has 181 touchdown passes at Lambeau Field.
- Counting all recorded consecutive-starts streaks, Favre tied No. 6 Gene Upshaw (1967-81) with 207 consecutive starts.
- Ryan Longwell tied his own franchise record for consecutive games with a field goal (14). He had previously set the mark during the 1997-98 seasons.
- Favre's 20-yard run in the second quarter was his longest since 1999 when he also had a 20-yard run.
- Donald Driver extended his current streak with a catch to 50 games and tied the fourth-longest stretches in team history, 50 by Don Hutson (1941-45) and Paul Coffman (1979-82).
- Cullen Jenkins blocked a Cleveland PAT in the third quarter. Cletidus Hunt was the last Packers player to block an extra-point attempt, Dec. 8, 2002, vs. Minnesota. Na'il Diggs blocked a field goal try, Oct. 11, 2004, vs. Tennessee.
- Terrence Murphy and Vonta Leach each made their first career NFL receptions.
- The Packers today scored in a 219th consecutive game, surpassing the fourth-longest streak in NFL history, 218 by the Dallas Cowboys from 1970-85.
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on clock management in the 4th Quarter) "I know people wanted us to huddle up on the ball, but we're limited offensively when we do that. We were backed up on the 4-yard line and took a drive the length of the field for the second possession of the quarter. We could not have completed and done what we did if we didn't have a huddle. We were snapping the ball with about 20 seconds on the clock. Just at the line of scrimmage, you're limited offensively what you can do. First of all, we were backed up and we had to pump it out of there and then we wanted to use every weapon in our offense which proved to be effective. If we had been able to stop them on a third and five we might have been able to win the ball game."
(on the final Cleveland touchdown) "There was a miscommunication from what I understand on that touchdown. I have to look at the tape. It looked like we were out of position to make that play. I don't know if hustle was a factor as much as we were out of position."
(on if this feels different than last year's start) "We won one last year and we're 0-2 so it's obviously different. It feels pretty bad, last year felt bad, this feels bad."
(on if a lack of urgency is present on the team) "I don't think urgency necessarily was the reason we lost the ball game. They knew what was at stake. That locker room was as quiet as I remember since Monday night against Oakland. You could have dropped a pin in there. We had talked about this game and how Cleveland was going to give us their very best shot. Talked about how when they come in here to play, how important it is for them to beat us here. We covered all our bases in regards to creating an urgency. We just didn't make the necessary plays to win this ball game or make the necessary calls as coaches to win this ball game, whatever way you want to look at it, we're all in this together."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on what the team misses without Javon Walker) "Statistically speaking, you look at today, obviously it was much better than last week. You can't replace Javon. Our guys will do a good job, but right now we're moving our guys around, trying to find the right combination. After Donald and Fergie, we're very inexperienced, struggling to line up correctly, which leads to indecision on their part, which leads to indecision from a quarterback's standpoint and even from a coach's standpoint. Sometimes you have to call plays that you don't call too often, the guys that aren't in the game that often have to be ready to run those plays."
(on not being able to pull this game out) "I'm shocked every time we lose. I'm very disappointed in losing, we should never accept losing. When you lose at home it's even worse. Regardless of what went on at halftime, you should want to win. It should mean everything to you. It's no fun practicing when you're losing...I've been fortunate throughout my career to have won most of the games, this is not very fun. I hope our younger guys and older guys aren't willing to accept losing, home or away...You can't get used to losing."
(on what will it take to finish drives and get the ball into the end zone) "Between the 20s is important, but not as important as getting the ball into the end zone. We can move the football on anyone. That opening drive is what we're capable of doing, what we expect to be doing. But I think somewhere along the way - and I give credit to Cleveland and Detroit - but it's not so much what they're doing as it is what we're not doing. We're making mistakes. Third-and-5 is much easier to convert than third-and-10, first-and-10 is much better than first-and-15. You have to stay at manageable down and distances and you can do that by making positive plays or not making costly penalties or silly mistakes. We all know it's the little things that will win ball games for you and obviously it's the little things that will lose ball games for you."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on if he was prepared to make a game-winning kick) "I actually told B.J. (Sander) on the bench when it was 13-7 that we were going to kick three second-half (field goals) and win the game. I expect every game to come down to the end, because you have to. I am certainly in game winning mode."
(on what the Packers did incorrectly) "When you don't play well enough to win, it's on many different levels. But bottom line is, from when I got here to how it is now, there is not that dominant, emotional, you-have-to-beat-the-heck-out-of-whoever-is-on-the-field mentality, whether it's Ashwaubenon High School or the world champs...For whatever reason, it's a different team and it's not there."
(on the Packers slow start to the season) "I think 0-2 is worse than 1-4. It's not like the schedule gets any easier with Tampa coming and at Carolina. You look internally to try and fix the problems. Obviously, we have a lot to fix."
WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on how the Packers adjust moving forward) "We have to do it, we have to; we have to get ourselves out of the hole. Right now, we are in the deep hole. We have to find a way to get out of it. It has to start next week. It starts Monday when we come in and watch film, see the mistakes we made, and correct them."
(on the offensive rhythm) "I just think there are a couple plays we probably should have made, and we didn't make them. Third-down plays where we couldn't stay on the field; we just didn't make those plays. When that happens, it can take you out of your rhythm. The first drive we went down and scored with ease, and that's how we should have kept going the rest of the game. We didn't."
SAFETY MARK ROMAN:
(on the final Browns touchdown) "We should have had somebody on (TE Steve Heiden), but I have to get the man down. It's stuff we know, we just have to execute it. We blew the coverage, but I still have to get the guy down. Ultimately, I'm the safety and I have to get the guy down."
(on defensive miscues) "We gave them stuff we shouldn't have given them. It wasn't a question of being out of position at all, or being out-physicaled. We just gave them stuff."
DEFENSIVE END KABEER GBAJA-BIAMILA:
(on the team's tone) "We haven't established things like the way they used to be, people like Reggie White. We have to find a way to get back to that."
(on feeling more pressure because Reggie White's jersey was retired) "I don't think so. We wanted to win. I always get funny about things like this, when you try to do something for somebody it just seems like it never works out."
(on whether he heard the "Reggie" chants) "It got really loud there, where the Cleveland Browns couldn't here themselves, and (Trent) Dilfer had to call timeout. That was pretty impressive. We just didn't produce."
(on the long touchdowns given up by the defense) "Take away those two big plays and we are in it, and we could have won the game. I'm confident we would have won the game. We just made some mistakes, not to take anything away from Cleveland. But that is what a good quarterback does, he sees the mistakes and capitalizes on it, and that's why they won."
FULLBACK WILLIAM HENDERSON:
(on his feeling on the team's offensive production) "I'm not shocked about point total, but when I am shocked about is when we are given opportunities - and the defense has given us many - offensively, how we've handled those opportunities. We haven't put the ball in the end zone in our red zone opportunities. We have let ourselves come up short."
(on the offensive production) "Our defense is keeping point totals down enough for us to win games. Offensively, we know that the best defense is a defense that is rested. When we get the chance to run the ball and work the ball, we can't have these three-and-outs. We have to find a way to get the ball downfield. And when we are in the red zone, we have to find a way to get it in the end zone."
Cleveland Browns Post-Game Quotes
HEAD COACH ROMEO CRENNEL:
(on winning on the road) "To win on the road is a tough place, anywhere in the NFL it's tough, and to be able to come to this place and hang in and the end and finally pull it out and get our first victory, I think the team deserves a lot of credit for that. We talked to them all week about being disciplined and staying the course and hanging into the fourth quarter. If we can hang into the fourth quarter, we are probably going to win our share of them, but probably lose some of them, but we won this one and I think that it's good for our team and I think it will carry us a little ways."
(on tight end Steve Heiden's play) "Heiden made some plays today and he has been a guy who had been working really hard this off season and training camp and it is good to see that happen for him because he is a good kid."
(on what the key to victory was defensively) "Discipline and technique, I mean that's what it was. They just hung in there. We started off trying not to let them run the ball and then they began to wear down a little bit and they were able to run the ball and throw the ball better particularly in the second half, but we just hung in and hung in and then the fact that our offense was able to put some points on the board and give us that cushion made a big difference in the game."
(on if he worried that the Browns losing ways in the past would affect the game) "This is the NFL. You are playing on the road, they have some momentum, you always worry that something is going to happen. But I never worried about being snake bitten. I thought about my guys trying to do what we were telling them to do and hang in there and trying to get done what we needed to do to win the game."
QUARTERBACK TRENT DILFER:
(on his offensive line protection) "They are playing great. You know they feel so sorry for me because I am so old that I think they are playing a little better than they normally would. They are playing great - two great games and no sacks against KGB this week and Justin Smith last week, two of the best pass rushers in the game and our guys have just done a phenomenal job. They stuck with it in the run game. I don't think we had big numbers running the ball, but we were very effective running the ball. We pounded away and had some physicality at the line of scrimmage and because of that we were able to make plays in the passing game."
(on wide receiver Braylon Edwards) "Braylon is getting better everyday. I think the thing that I am most happy about is that he is a kid that wants to learn. We meet as a group Thursday nights on our own without any coaches and Braylon is asking questions and he wants to get better and he wants to have a sense of rhythm and timing with me and after the one down the middle where I just missed him, I went to the sideline and I said that we aren't there yet but we are going to get there in this game and we did. We got there on the slant. We caught them in a blitz and Braylon had a great release. He stayed vertical on the route, which allowed him to split the safety and the corner and then he outran them."
(on winning his first game at Lambeau Field) "It is big. This is a big one for me, winning as a Brown and I was 0-10 up here as a quarterback and this is big to come up here and erase some of those demons."
LINEBACKER ANDRA DAVIS:
(on his 19 combined tackle performance) "I was just out there working hard, just running to the ball and doing what we do in practice. They tell us to get to the ball and we feel like if we can play like we practice then we can compete we anybody and be in any game."
(on playing in Green Bay) "I think we did pretty good. It was a hard fought battle. Anytime you play against Brett Favre you know it is going to the end. He is a great quarterback. With the tribute to Reggie White we knew that they were going to be amped up, but at the same time that kind of fueled our fire too because he was a great player and paved the way for a lot of people. It was a great game and a great win for us. We are very thankful."
(on looking ahead next week to Indianapolis) "We go from one great quarterback to another. It doesn't get any easier. We gave up too many third downs. We have to shore up a lot more things and just improve every day."
