PACKERS-BENGALS POST-GAME QUOTES
MIKE SHERMAN
Do you think Brett Favre should have spiked the ball at the end to give you another shot at the end zone?
"Those are things that Brett Favre has done in his career, and he has had success with it. I expected that he was going to spike the ball. I hate that he put himself in position to possible get hurt, but if he hits it for a touchdown then we're all patting him on the back. He has been a player that makes plays, but he didn't make one there."
Favre had five interceptions today. Do you think he is a victim of trying too hard?
"I think he is guilty of that every week. He always wants to do as much as he possible can. When he plays well, he tries to do as much as he can. Today is no different. That is who he is. He is going to do as much as he possible can to help us win. Today it wasn't enough."
Can you comment on how you think Antonio Chatman and Tony Fisher played today?
"I think Fisher did a heck of a job today. We didn't lose this game because of injuries. I think Fisher did a heck of a job. I think Chatman stepped up. He did a lot of good things. He had six catches. I told him when I saw what their intention was that he had to step up and make some plays, and I think he did a nice job."
Were you happy with your defense?
"In the first half, we couldn't get off the field on third down. We couldn't stop the drive. We needed to stop the drive. But I must say, that with as many turnovers as we had, to get out the game with the point differential as such that it was and us having a chance to win the ball game I thought they rose to the occasion, particularly in the second half. They gave us a chance in the end. We fully expected to win there. With 2:56 left on the clock, with the ball on the 11 yard-line. I thought we had a chance to win the ball game."
Could you talk about Brett Favre's mentality after throwing five interceptions?
"In regard to him throwing interceptions, I don't worry about his confidence. I don't worry about his mental toughness, and his ability to shake things off. He'll make the next throw with the same tenacity as he threw the previous. There were a couple of misfortunate things that happened out there. Give Cincinnati credit, they caused a couple of them themselves. As far as Brett, he is very resilient."
Some teams would quit at 1-6, but you guys show no signs of giving up. Do you attribute that to the youthfulness of this roster?
"I attribute it to the fact that we're not allowed to quit. We're not going to give up. We're going to go into this next week and get prepared. We are going to practice hard. We're going to practice Friday with some humor and laughter. We'll go to work next week. Tomorrow with be tough day for them. Wednesday with be a little bit shaky as it was last week, but you can't hang onto it. There's not time to feel sorry for yourself. What will make you feel better is to win a ball game. That's our objective. I have zero concern about this team giving up, and competing, and trying and doing everything they can to win. And I have zero concern about them making excuses. As I told them after this game, this has nothing to do with injuries. We turned the ball over too many times and didn't get off the field on third down."
Brett Favre
What are your thoughts about the fan coming on the field and taking the ball out of your hand at the end of the game?
"I was surprised that happened. I thought it was a referee. The whistle had blown and it was hard to hear. I turned around and looked, and he takes the ball out of my hand."
Do you feel that this situation affected the outcome of the game?
"I don't think the situation helped us. I am not going to sit hear and make excuses. I am a firm believer that you make your own breaks - your own luck - to a certain extent. I will say we have not had a whole lot of breaks this season, especially injury breaks, and they are not in our favor. We have had a chance to win every game we have played in, and we have only won one of those.
"Our defense played extremely well and gave us plenty of chances to win, and we didn't. We had some opportunities on offense and we didn't make the most of them. I give the Bengals credit. There is something that they have been doing all year - they intercept the ball. They create turnovers, regardless of how they happen. They are creating turnovers and they did it again today."
Has the change at the center position affected the offense?
"It affected it on one play, obviously. I was changing the protection call and he mistakenly snapped the ball. I think that is where experience plays a part. This was a tough environment, and we handled it better. It would be easy to blame this on Scott Wells every time there is a bad snap. I think putting him in his situation would be difficult for anybody. We have all had our share of mistakes in that area. I know he feels terrible, and we were making the right protection call. Whether we would have succeeded in making the play, I think it would have given us a better chance. That play and numerous others have been a microcosm of our season."
Is this season similar to the 1992 season?
"They are a lot alike, but we were winning those games then. I think sometimes knowing too much can be a bad thing, or knowing what to expect can work against you.
"In 1992, this team had not had success for many years. At that time, I didn't know how difficult is was to win. I was just having fun and making plays. I enjoy playing, and I would love for things to run smoothly at the point in my career. I realize that injuries, and because of the way things are going, that things aren't going to run smoothly, so I have to at times adlib. Knowing (what I know) now, I realize how hard it is to turn things around. I tell myself week in and week out that this is way too difficult. It is hard to make a living this way each week. It would be a lot of fun if we would have won this game, but I don't want to make any predictions for the future because right now is what matters."
MARVIN LEWIS
Initial comments...
"The biggest thing I told our football team was congratulations, but understand that we have to play a lot better and more consistently. We keep it interesting. A lot of guys did a lot of good things, but we can't be inconsistent. We did better today offensively on third down then we'd fall off on third down on defense, particularly in the first half. We have to keep working. We have a big week ahead of us, and our guys understand that."
What can you say about Brett Favre?
"We know how competitive he is. The thing the guys have to understand is that he avoids you (the defenders) to throw the football. You have to play smart around the quarterback when you play against him. He's been a great player for a long time, and has an innate ability to avoid the rush by giving ground. He's tough."
You're up 14 with just over 10 or so minutes to go, and Carson Palmer went deep...
"He ran the play call, and they made a play. Fourteen obviously wasn't enough, so we were still trying to score."
Can you talk about the job your secondary did picking them off?
"The defensive football team did a good job today, and got some turnovers. We still have to tackle better. We didn't tackle very well at all."
What does 6-2 mean at the halfway mark mean to you?
"The guys have to feel good about it. We've taken care of business when we've needed to, and now we have to go take care of business consistently. Six-and-two is a good record right now, but let's be better the second half of the season."
How tough is it to not turn points over on the turnovers?
"It makes it a closer game at the end of the game."
At the end of the half, it looked like you were at least going to get three...
"Again, it's a thing we have to learn and understand. We had three breakdowns there. We lined up wrong in the formation, so we had to take a time out. Chad came on the field, and we got called for 12 men in the huddle. Those are things that we keep learning from. We have to eliminate those kinds of errors and move forward."
CHAD JOHNSON
I guess you can never relax when Brett Favre's on the other side...
"No, not at all. We did have situations where we could have taken advantage of a good opportunity. With the five turnovers we forced, the score should have been a lot bigger than it was, but we didn't capitalize on the turnovers."
How is your injured shoulder?
"When I dove for a pass in the end zone, I came down on my shoulder. It was the shoulder (collarbone) I broke a couple of years ago, but I just aggravated it."
Is it nice to bounce back after last week?
"Yes, it feels good."

C Mike Flanagan in the 4th quarter left the game with issues related to his hernia surgery. His return is questionable.

Sunday marked the first 5-interception game (regular season) of Brett Favre's career. He once threw 6 interceptions in a playoff game (vs. St. Louis, Jan. 20, 2002).
Favre also passed No. 2 John Elway in two categories: passing attempts and passing yards.
Favre entered with 7,225 (Elway: 7,250) attempts and 51,305 (Elway: 51,475) yards.
