Packers-Eagles Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Sherman
On the injury suffered by tight end Bubba Franks:
"Obviously he took a pretty good hit, and any time your player is laying out on the field like he was for that length of time there is concern. He had some numbness in his hand when he left here. He got back all of the other faculties that we tested him on, but there was some numbness. We'll probably leave him overnight just from a precautionary standpoint and then we'll go from there. But I think he'll be okay. Any time a player gets hit like he did in this game, you dodge a bullet, and hopefully we did with him. In terms of the extent of time missed, I really can't tell you at this current time."
On whether Franks will stay in Philadelphia or fly home with the Packers:
"He'll be in the hospital. In the old days, we would have put him back on the bus and the plane probably, but he'll be well looked-after here in Philadelphia and we'll get him flying back tomorrow with our trainers."
On Brett Favre's decision-making on his final pass attempt that resulted in an interception:
"I don't know what he saw. I couldn't see from his vantage point what he saw and what opportunities he had. I know [Jevon] Kearse had quick pressure, but we were able to corral him and get outside of him. I can't really tell you until I look at the tape because I don't know what he was seeing. Obviously he saw the immediate pressure, and he got around it."
On Packer turnovers at crucial times in the game:
"Certainly when you turn the ball over on the kickoff return unit....they're all [turnovers] costly. On kickoff return, because of where you turn the ball over usually, it allows an automatic field goal unless you have a great return, which we have not yet been able to do this year. To turn the ball over on that part of the field on that team is obviously costly. As it was, I thought our defense responded pretty well here at the end. They stood up and forced a field goal. I felt like we had a chance in our two-minute offense to move the ball down the field, but that didn't happen. "
On the play of running back Samkon Gado:
"I hate to evaluate a player without having access to going back to look at the tape. I call the play, see the beginning of the play, watch the end of the play, and then my eyes are back down onto the next play. I will do a better job of evaluating that when I watch the tape. I saw him make some plays. I thought maybe he bounced one or two outside that he should have kept inside, but I don't know what he was seeing. Until you know what he's seeing, whether it's the quarterback or the running back, you can't tell that unless you're on the field with them or you're watching the tape. So, I'll hold judgment until I watch the tape on him."
On the effect that Packer injuries have had on the play of Brett Favre:
"Obviously it's difficult. It's difficult on me, and it's difficult on him. Certainly familiarity is a part of good offensive football. Like today, we ran a key pass for William Henderson who would have normally been in there but he was out with a concussion. We threw it to somebody who isn't quite what William is in regard to catching the football, and I thought that was a key drop. We need to catch that to keep that drive going. We had another drive going and then we fumbled the football. That part has been very frustrating. As far as familiarity with the offense and everybody being on the same page, we had great practices last week, but when you lose a couple of guys in the game, it gets a little bit difficult if you're the quarterback."
On why the Packers have not been able to get over the hump in close games:
"I think it's pretty obvious. If you turn the ball over as many times as we did today, I don't care if you're the 1996 Super Bowl team, you don't win this game. You can't turn the ball over to the degree we turned it over today and expect to win the football game. We fought like hell today to get back into the game. We got back into the game and we got the lead. I even thought that once we got the kickoff return, we were ready to go, but unfortunately we gave the ball back to Philadelphia for chip shots [field goals]. I think it's pretty self-evident as to why we didn't win the game today."
On whether he was surprised that the Eagles used different running backs in the running game:
"[Brian] Westbrook had 21 carries, [Ryan] Moats had six and [Lamar] Gordon had three. I didn't find that unusual. We knew Westbrook would carry the ball and we have the utmost respect for him. I think he is a great player - not a good player - but a great player. We expected him to get the bulk of the carries, and he did. He had 21 carries for 117 yards."
On what the Packers approach will be now that they have suffered their ninth loss of the season:
"It's always been and it always will be whether we're 2-9 or 9-2, on the next ballgame and getting ready to play that game. We'll go back to preparation on Wednesday and getting ready to play the next ballgame. That doesn't change."
On Packer injuries suffered in the game:
"William Henderson had a concussion and returned. They cleared him to go back into the ballgame, but he had a mild concussion. [Paris] Lenon had a shoulder and wrist injury, to the degree I don't know. [Jeremy] Thornburg might have separated his shoulder. ReSahrd Lee hurt his ribs. And obviously you know about Bubba Franks."
QB Brett Favre
On what he saw on that last interception:
"I was trying to make a play. [WR Robert] Ferguson was running deep, and I just tried to take a shot."
On whether he questions his ability to bring the team back in a game like he use to:
"No. I thought we would do it again tonight. I thought that we would do it for just about every game we have played this year, but it just hasn't worked out for whatever reason."
On how frustrating this game and the season has been for him:
"It's no different than last week or the week before when we had a chance to win the game. And at times during the game, I thought we had it, but we found a way to let it slip away. Give credit to Philadelphia. In some ways, they are going through what we're going through with injuries and problems. We've had a chance to win every game. We've only won two of them, and that's very frustrating."
On what he was looking for on that last interception:
"I was looking for a touchdown. Ferguson was running deep. I was trying to make a play."
On whether they have any other goals they have other than winning the next game:
"I can't speak for the other guys. Not being in this situation before, it's hard to have a game plan, so to speak. As I said Wednesday (23rd) in my press conference, as an individual player the only thing you can play for and the only thing you should play for is to be the best regardless of the situation. If you're in the pre-season, post-season, regular season, playoffs, you have a chance for the playoffs, or you're out of it, you should still want to be the best on the field. I don't see how you can step out on the field and not care, at any point. And tonight for example, I wanted to win that game as bad as I wanted to win in two years in the playoffs here. If win the game it probably doesn't put us any closer to the playoffs than if we lose it. But, just the fact that we're able to put a uniform on and go out there, you should want to be the best. We're not going to make the playoffs, that's obvious, but there are a lot of guys that are competing for jobs for next year. So, if they don't pick it up then they'll be out of a job."
On whether there is hope in turning things around for next season:
"Well, I think so. I think in today's game you can make a huge turn around very quickly. With the free agent market as it is today and players changing teams yearly, you can put together a team quickly and be competitive. So sure, there can be a quick turnaround, but it's hard to think that far into the future with what's going on now. In some ways, I think some people are thinking that way already, but I don't have many of those left. So, I'm just trying to make it through this season."
On whether he has plans for next year:
"No, I haven't even thought about it yet. I shouldn't say that. I have thought about it. Just because we're 2-9 it really hasn't swayed my decision one way or another dramatically. I kind of had a feeling, going into this season, 3 weeks into it , 6 weeks into it, but it is what it is. It doesn't change the way I compete. I won't make a decision based on the fact that we're 2-9 at this point."
On playing the Chicago Bears next week:
"I'm sure people in Chicago are tickled to death at the Packers right now. I got to watch a little bit of the game today, and they're playing outstanding. I give them a lot of credit for playing outstanding. They're playing a lot better than we're playing. They're defense is tops in the league, and they're doing all of the right things. I'm sure people out there who are gamblers would bet on the Chicago Bears. And with the way things have gone for us, it would be a good bet. But, we'll see what happens. I thought we had this game. I thought we had the last game. I thought we had the game before that, but we've won two. So, the odds are not in our favor."
On whether it will be easier playing Chicago twice in four weeks:
"I'm sure they're probably thinking it's easy. Once again, they're doing all the right things. They're winning football games. They're winning close football games. In my 14 years here, we've for the most part heads up handle the Bears. And, I'm sure that people out there are saying, 'its about time', 'it's our turn'. All we can do is be a spoiler, I guess. Minnesota is playing well right now. Chicago obviously has an advantage. This team, I'm speaking about our team, regardless of who we play the next few weeks, we've gotta find a way to get a win. We've had opportunities in every game. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing."
On whether he still has that feeling that he will turn the game around:
"I really felt like as many negative things happened today, for the people who have followed this team this year, it's 'here we go again'. But, I really felt like, even after we fumbled the second kickoff and they got the field goal, I knew now we had to get a touchdown which makes it tough. I really felt like we could do it. And, there have been times when I've won in that situation where I didn't feel as confident which tells you that it's a complete team effort. The ball has to bounce the right way, because even at times when my confidence hasn't been that high, as maybe it was today, we've won. You take some chances and sometimes they go your way sometimes they don't. I really felt confident. There's been numerous times this year where I've felt confident. And, I hate to put ourselves in that position, because the odds are against you when you have to do it week in and week out. But, I can't say this year that I've felt less confident. We've been in this situation all season long, every game. I don't know how many points we've lost total this year, not many."
On losing playmakers like TE Bubba Franks and FB William Henderson:
"You tell me. It hurts when you don't have your guys in there. I think Philly feels that as well and there are numerous teams. New England's feeling it, but no one feels sorry for you. It gives other guys on this team to play, or across this league an opportunity to play. It's funny how given that opportunity some people rise to the occasion and some people don't. I'm one of them. I got the opportunity to play, because of an injury. It's a small window. From my end, it is frustration when William goes down and Vonta [Leach] comes in and we run a key pass. The only key pass we ran today really that had chance to be really big, and he doesn't catch it. I feel bad for Vonta. He works hard, and he's a young kid. That just goes to show you the season."
C Grey Ruegamer
On the play of the Packers:
"We have played hard and you are expected to play hard. It comes down to the fact that you have to make big plays and we have not made those plays to help us win games. We have played hard and played competitively but what does that do when you do not win games. We have to learn to win games when we have the opportunity to do so."
On what it is going to take to win some games:
"We have to play consistent. A good example is that in the third quarter we had the ball and were moving it. We got a penalty as we were moving down the field and then it was 3rd and 15 and we cannot play like this and win. "
On the thirteen play drive when they came up with no points:
"I do not know in the game how many turnovers we had but this has been the recipe for disaster for us this season. We have turned the ball over a bunch and really had a lot of penalties and we did that today. It is hard enough to beat a good NFL team when you are playing well then when you are making a lot of mistakes."
On what he thinks of the play of Running Back Samkon (Gado):
"I thought that Gado really ran hard in the game. Obviousily I thought that we did not give him all the holes he needed for big runs. When we did give him some opportunities he seemed to bust the tackles and make the big plays. He has been doing this job but we have been lacking consistency as a team."
WR Donald Driver
On how the Packers played tonight:
"The game did not balance out in our favor because to win you cannot have turnovers. This definitely is what cost us the game."
On if it gets lower than being 2-9:
"Yeah it could get lower if we were to loss the rest of our games. We have to learn how to win football games and we have to learn to do it now. The thing that is hurting this team the most is turnovers. We have been making a lot of turnovers this season."
On if he thought that QB Brett Favre seemed to struggle:
"I do not think that Brett struggled at all. The Eagles defense said that they wanted to come out and stop me and they held me to three catches. It is normally not like that and I can usually make the plays. They knew they had to double me and it worked out in their favor."
On if the Packers feel like a bad team:
"I do not feel that we are a bad team at all. We went out there and played hard but as I have said the turnovers will definitely kill you. I think that if we did not make some many mistakes we could be sitting at 9-2 this year."
WR Antonio Chatman
On the season for the Packers:
"We are really struggling and it has been a bad year for us. We cannot get anything right."
On what they have to do to finish the season on a good note:
"We have to go out and win the rest of our games because this losing is really getting tiresome. If we keep losing it really gets humiliating."
On the play in the first half but not in the second half:
"Everything seemed to be clicking on offense and then we came out in the second half and we were moving the ball. But we seemed to just have to many penalties that seemed to set us back. It really did put us into a bad situation."
On what the Eagles did on defense:
"I had the single coverage most of the game and they were playing two man on Donald (Driver). They refused to let us make plays in the middle today and when they call my number I am just looking to make the play."
C/G Scott Wells
On the way that the offensive line played today in the running game:
"It was not effective enough in the way that we played. I think our coaching staff was rotating us on the line in and out to keep us fresh. Grey (Ruemaker) played well and it is like having another starter in the game. Even when he was in the game we were able to move the ball well. We ran the ball very well in the first half but not in the second because the Eagles made adjustments."
On not giving a sack up till the second half:
"In the second half we gave up a sack and just sometimes you get beat. I think that we were really able to move the ball well tonight, but they we either turned the ball over sometimes or took a dumb penalty. You cannot win when you are beating yourself."
DE Aaron Kampman
On QB Mike McMahon:
"We knew that he was a streaky quarterback...a rhythm type of guy and we wanted to keep him in check, and not let him throw the ball and scramble. For the most part we did that, but we never really got them under control as far as the run game. They did some things with their run game so that McMahon didn't really have to do too much, he just managed the game. I give him credit he did what he had to do, but I think RB [Brian] Westbrook and their tailbacks had good games. We knew that he was fast, maybe faster than your starter, but they are both very mobile, but we wanted to keep him in the well, and for the most part we contained him, but it comes down to the fact that they were able to run the ball and they created takeaways."
On today's game:
"It was their running game that hurt us...that and the turnovers, and our inability to create them and the Eagles ability to get those (turnovers); I think that the X-factor in the game was the turnovers."
On the Philadelphia Eagles running attack:
"We knew what we were going to get from RB Westbrook, but we hadn't seen a lot of RB [Ryan] Moats, you know he was the new guy, and he did well. They are all good runners, I give them credit, they made plays when they had to, but again it comes down to who is going to turn the ball over and which defense is going to get the most takeaways, and we needed to create more takeaways on defense."
DT Cullen Jenkins
On QB Mike McMahon:
"He was really a factor today. Truth be known I didn't really get to him, I was just sitting back when I got that deflection (1st Quarter), but he's quick...he made some real good decisions back there, and I don't think we got a sack on him, except maybe at the end, but he was definitely a factor in today's game."
On the Philadelphia Eagles offense:
"I think what was most surprising was their ability to run. Our run defense has been pretty sturdy against the run all season and I feel that we gave up too much today. RB Westbrook had over 100 yards against us and they creased us a few times and that was the biggest surprise because we have been very consistent against that."
On the turnovers:
"That was huge...you can never turn the ball over that much. The stats show that if you turn the ball over 3 or more times that the winning percentage is real low or real high for the team that does get the turnovers, so it's just one of the many things that we have to work on when we get back to practice."
On RB Lamar Gordon:
"We first started off well against him, we got the turnover...he fumbled the ball, and then after that we didn't really get much, but RB Westbrook is the one that really killed us. He broke a lot of tackles against us and he just ran the ball really well."
LB Na'il Diggs
On today's game:
"The way we were playing in the four quarters before today, we should have stopped them, but we made some mistakes in coverage, and they just made the right plays. The turnovers killed us, and I should have covered a lot better. I should have been quicker, and covered tighter."
On the Eagles offense:
"I kind of figured that they would run more, because of the new quarterback, and they came out and did a good job, and stuck with it. Some plays were better than others, and some plays we played better than others. To me it didn't even seem like they had that many rushing yards, but when you give the quarterback scrambles and you add that in there, then it all add up. I honestly don't feel like RB Westbrook gashed us. He had one good run for a touchdown in the 1st half, and other than that we hit him pretty good. We just let certain plays and turnovers get us. We didn't make plays when we needed it, and that's just how it's been."
CB Al Harris
On the Eagles run offense:
"It is what it is. It's plain in black and white. It wasn't a secret formula or whatever we just have to stop guys."
On the emergence of CB Rod Hood:
"I wasn't here when he was here, but I think over the years he has been doing a good job. With CB Lito Shepard out, he is a starter now. We didn't catch any touchdowns on him so that says a lot right there. He's doing a good job."
**
End of game.
**
S Jeremy Thornburg has officially been listed as out for the remainder of the game. He sustained a shoulder injury in the 1st quarter.
**
CB Al Harris went to the locker room for an IV after complaining of cramps. His return is probable.

Full precaution was taken after Franks complained of experiencing tingling in both shoulders. He does have movement in all of his extremities. He was taken to a local hospital, which has better x-rays than that available at the stadium.
**
End of 1st quarter.
